Youth Environment Service aims to do situational analysis, conduct urban household identification, mobilization using clustering approach, form community strategic partnership to improve low immunization coverage for the cross border mobile and host community in Busia Uganda/Kenya agglomeration.
Explain the innovation (2,500 characters)
The innovation is design to address information access gaps related to importance of immunization, benefits of immunization, the schedules of immunization and the myths surrounding immunization and promote local participation. The people to benefit from this innovation are the cross border mobile and host communities, the regional government, the under five children, to ensure that cross border populations don’t fall through cracks in receiving essential services, they will benefit through universal comprehensive immunization coverage active involvement and knowledge competence at individual, household and community and institutional levels. The innovation will reach the homes peri-urban, informal settlements and slums in the cross border towns, where most residence lack access to water, lack sanitation facilities, poor housing unit and roads are inaccessible due to poor physical planning. The constituency’s age range between 0-5 years and young girls, who need HPV vaccination, the pregnant mother between the ages of 14-49. The number to be reached remains enormous, although some 73,000 cross border mobile communities are currently living in urban towns. YES will provide technical, technological and operational support to harmonize coordination and documentation structures established at local level, the public will be empowered with knowledge and information to engage in routine cross border immunization backed by local frequency modulation community adverts, and calls, (ii) Develop different 30 minutes immunization community participatory documentary in a short image movie, to be powered at the border one stop Centre and in communities using plasma large screen TV to educate and mobilize residents. Also social media shall be installed for cross border mobile individuals to connect the elite members to create awareness about immunization call. YES has repeatedly demonstrated high level local participation, backed by right messages, well-coordinated local mobilization structures, clusters established with leadership roles, targeting most disadvantaged and high risk populations residing at the border. The overarching target audiences are the mobile, hard to reach, uneducated, low income households through community knowledge platforms, enabling different groups to document cracks and opportunity to access health service that can be scaled.

Busia District is situated at the border with Kenya in the west. Busia Municipality is the Ugandan part of the Busia agglomeration, divided by the Ugandan / Kenyan border. As a busy border town and commercial market centre, Busia faces a highly fluctuating and steadily increasing population.
Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)
YES has a large network local authorities, farmer organizations, universities, private sector, rural and urban communities). Among the partners of YES are the NYU International University, the Austrian Commission for Development Studies (KEF OEAD), and the UNDP/NTEAP. The Scientific and technical support will be provided by international and Ugandan experts from the Ministry of Health Uganda, GAVI office Uganda, Ministry of Health Kenya, the local authorities YES has a large network (local authorities, farmer organizations, universities, private sector, and urban local authorities.
How is your idea unique? (750 characters)
The idea is based on 7 critical positive determinants related to the physical environment, political, linguistic or geographical reasons, with 3 of them being directed at regional and national level such as development and harmonization of legislation and policies, support creation of cross border expanded program on immunization, development of integrated health education and mobilization policy. The remaining component is aimed at community intervention to demonstrate community based assets can be harnessed in urban towns, regional shift towards more glocal participatory driven approaches. The stakeholders are mobilized, educated on governance and empowered to identify, design and implement the child and maternal health family plan.

The overall project shall be overseen by the Technical Manager who has expertise in the sector of community mobilization. He is responsible for ensuring technical soundness, quality and impact of the project through ongoing technical support, field monitoring and support supervision. YES will enlist the partnership of regional health Ministry, technical experts from New york University, the local stakeholders and the migration department
Scientific and technical support will be provided by international and Ugandan experts in the field of public health and urban development; institutional support by municipal authorities and policy makers and private sector.
