This app helps parents and caregivers to locate nearest routine immunization session site and helps to know the day and timings of session site. The app also helps to navigate and reach the session site through Google maps.
Explain the innovation (2,500 characters)
Improving urban immunization coverage has been a challenge across the world. Karnataka has 10 large urban corporations in state including Bangalore Metropolitan City which accounts for nearly one fifth the state population (Bangalore ~12 Million population)
Through the regular immunization intensification activities like Mission Indradhanush, there has been a focus on urban areas also to improve immunization coverage through urban specific strategies. The main reasons for children dropping out from immunization have been awareness Gaps and AEFI apprehension.
This Android app is helping to bridge this gap through awareness in the community through information regarding location of session site, timings and navigation routes. This would also help in demand generation for immunization services though adopting newer technology in reaching out to urban populations.
This would not only help urban poor by directing them to nearest Immunization session sites but also people from middle-class and upper-middle class who form majority of urban population. Many a times, they are either not aware of free and quality immunization services from the Government sector or drop-out from further vaccinations due to increased out-of-pocket expenditure by getting their children vaccinated from private doctors.
This simple app downloaded on smart phone (which is common asset with urban families), would guide to nearest Routine immunization session site where all vaccines would be provided free of cost as per National Immunization Schedule. The app shows nearest 5 fixed RI sessions mapped through GIS, along with distance, Timings, day of vaccination and navigation route to reach through Google maps.
This was field tested with GIS mapping of 30,000 Polio booths during recent Polio SIA and urban population found it really helpful in getting information on polio booth location.
The GIS mapping is now available for all fixed RI session sites in both urban and rural areas in entire state of Karnataka. As part of urban immunization strengthening focus, we are in process of GIS tagging of all outreach session sites in urban areas
Since this was in-built app from KSRSAC, which is Government line department, there is no exclusive investment on this app. App has been deployed with optimum use of available resources and manpower from within government departments and technical support from WHO-NPSP state office.
This is replicable in other challenging urban areas.
Which part(s) of the world does this innovation target?
The app is currently expanded and functional through the entire state of Karnataka and specially useful in all 10 urban corporation areas including Bangalore. This app is suitable and replicable for use in all urban areas across the world where smart phone use is quite common.
Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)
"Department of Health & Family Welfare" has partnered with Karnataka State Remote Sensing Applications Centre (KSRSAC) and WHO- NPSP state office for Karnataka in developing and implementation of this app.
KSRSAC is a Government of Karnataka line department which developed the app and supports the software and GIS applications required.
WHO-India, National Polio Surveillance project, state office for Karnataka provided technical support and inputs in development and implementation of the app
Health workers from Department of Health and Family Welfare Geo-tagged each of session sites through another app provided by KSRSAC. Implementation was supervised at every level by Immunization field monitors, Medical officers and District RCH officers.
Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka along with KSRSAC and WHO-NPSP can support in dissemination of this innovation and support in knowledge sharing with other governments counterparts and partner agencies
How is your idea unique? (750 characters)
This is a very simple tool in present day context for implementation in urban areas which would further help in dissemination of routine immunization information and demand generation. The Android app is very easy to download and use. Guides to nearest RI site with information on time and distance.
Though the final output seems very user friendly and simple, there has to be a lot of background work with urban area specific GIS customisations. Availability of Good urban RI microplans would be an asset and most critical for implementation of this innovation.
This would also require extensive communication efforts to make people aware of presence and utility of this app.
Easily replicable with some good planning and co-ordination.
