StaTwig aims to use Blockchain and IoT to improve visibility, traceability and authenticity in vaccines supply chains, by tracking chain of custody, cold-chain management and serialization data on Immutable ledgers that connects all stakeholders in supply chains. We will partner with vaccine suppliers, distributors and health departments.

Explain the innovation (2,500 characters)

Monitoring Immunization programs is difficult in urban environments because of the rapid growth and mobility of populations in cities. To tackle these challenges and drive efficiency we need access to validated data that can be used to generate actionable insights. These insights can help health workers, governments and organizations such as UNICEF and GAVI to improve planning and strategy development in urban centers. Using validated data on cold-chain equipments, vaccine inventories, population and coverage data we can enhance micro-planning in larger cities. However, most data collected by different private and public service delivery providers gets locked away in organizational silos making it almost unusable. Lack of access to this data creates friction for all stakeholders in planning, delivering and forecasting immunization programs. StaTwig solves these challenges by using blockchain technology to create a decentralized platform that can be used to validate and record data from multiple sources and stakeholders. These immutable and decentralized records will help us improve visibility, monitoring and tracking of immunization programs. Our platform connect suppliers, distributors(UNICEF, GAVI and countries) and regional distributors and service delivery providers on a single data fabric where they can securely record and share immunization data with each other. Today we collect vaccine serialization data from suppliers(serial and batch numbers, expiry dates and cold-chain data), inventory and cold-chain management data at national and regional distribution centers and immunization records at child level. Our vision is to track and record complete global immunization data from every single country and region on a single platform. As the platform is decentralized(no centralized ownership), distributed and immutable it helps us build trust, transparency and authenticity in immunization supply chains. We are a UNICEF Innovation Fund portfolio startup and our open source project is funded by UNICEF. We have multiple pilots underway with suppliers in Hyderabad, India, UNICEF in Iraq and Syria. Apart from vaccines, we have deployed the platform for multiple projects to track and prevent food waste in countries such as India, and the US. Our platform can generate actionable Insight that will help the service delivery partners to improve efficiency in highly urban populations and can be used to take automated actions.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

Through UNICEF innovation Fund we have built partnerships with various UNICEF country offices and immunization teams. These partnerships are useful in deploying and validating the solutions. One of such initiatives is the smart child program at UNICEF where we are using our platform to record vaccines transfers from suppliers all the way to the child. While doing this we track the cold-chain data, expired vaccines and monitor vaccine wastage associated with the above. We are also partners with University of California, Berkeley’s smart village movement which is helping us deploy the solutions is several districts in Arunachal Pradesh, India. Smart Village Team has 600 resources, mostly interns, on the field who can collect data from several government hospitals and health camps to track the immunization coverage and vaccine inventory data We are also exploring partnerships in bangladesh for deployments to track immunization programs in rohingya refugee camp.

How is your idea unique? (750 characters)

Traditional application providers use centralized models to own user data in order to generate revenue through ads, marketing or by selling the data. Breaking away from this we are building decentralized applications using blockchain where users take ownership of their data and the revenues for the app providers is only through transaction costs that users are charged. However blockchain is not a single technology but it is a framework for using different technologies to create decentralized apps. Therefore in most blockchain usecases the apps are custom built. By focusing on usecase of vaccines we narrow down our scope. This enables us to build a product that works for any immunization supply chains. This is a more efficient way!

StaTwig was started by Sid Chakravarthy in 2016 to solve the information friction in the supply chains that leads to a lot of product wastage. Our focus has always been on preventing wastage of critical products such as food and vaccines.

Our efforts from the beginning has been to encourage diversity in the team. Our Technology and Slaes teams are led by a women and we have team members from three different nationality. We have also maintained diversity in terms of age. Our oldest team member is 57 years and youngest is 20 year old. We are one of the few startups with a dedicated human resorces manager to ensure diversity and a balanced work culture.
