Ada is a free AI-powered personal health guide app improving global healthcare access. Ada has the capability to screen individuals for their immunization history and guide them to vaccine providers if there are gaps in their immunization. Ada can also aggregate this information to provide population-level vaccination insights.

Explain the innovation (2,500 characters)

Rapid urbanization – which will see an estimated 70% of the world’s population live in densely populated urban areas by 2050 – presents public healthcare problem for under-immunised communities. However, impoverished, mobile populations that cannot access basic healthcare are projected to benefit from improved access to internet and technology. With more than 40% and 70% of individuals in emerging and developed economies, respectively, owning a smartphone, Ada has proven its capability to reach millions of people with its technology. As the world’s leading personal health guide, Ada is uniquely positioned to solve the public health challenges of urbanization, such as vaccine delivery. Our innovation, Ada, is a personalized AI-powered symptom assessment app providing free, instant access to credible medical expertise and guidance on what to do next for anyone with access to a smartphone and an internet connection. Ada has 6 million users (including over 2.5 million in LMICs), over 10 million symptom assessments, and is rated as the best medical app for +130 countries. The app is available in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese and French; versions in Mandarin, Arabic, Swahili and Romanian will be available by mid-2019. Ada will benefit individual users and public health sector stakeholders. Within the next 6–12 months we will enable users to input their vaccination history into Ada. Based on this information, Ada seeks to partner with vaccine providers to enable users in GAVI countries to receive reliable guidelines on immunization, and guidance to an appropriate local vaccination provider to address immunization gaps. This information that users provide to Ada yields real-time aggregated populations insights on vaccination trends. Such insights, such as trends in infectious diseases, can already be gleaned from Ada’s data as a result of the app’s widespread use. This real-time data can help inform strategies for vaccine delivery, thereby accelerating immunization efficiencies within urban populations in Gavi-supported countries. A typical user could include Aaliyah, a mother with a smartphone in Dar es Salaam, that uses the Swahili version of Ada to track vaccinations for her two children, and to receive information on the recommended sequence for full immunization. If her children are missing crucial vaccines in their profiles, Ada could recognize this and recommend specific locations for Aaliyah to obtain them.

We plan to launch the vaccination history tool for our entire global userbase. By partnering with governments and local vaccine providers through the GAVI network, we aim to offer guidance to local vaccine providers in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Who will work alongside your organization in the project idea? (1,000 characters)

To provide targeted immunization guidance for people missing essential vaccines, Ada seeks to partner with vaccine providers to map out local care options in our app. As such, we would like to work closely with the GAVI network to deploy immunization guidance at scale. We already provide Ada users with localized next-step guidance based on their symptom assessments through our work with a range of partners. For example, if a UK user is suggested a condition requiring them to speak with a primary care doctor, in some areas Ada directly connects the individual with their own NHS GP to make an appointment through the app. If Ada identifies the individual may have a mental health condition, guidance is towards appropriate psychological providers such as Dr Julian and IESO. We are currently expanding our guidance options across LMICs, testing the feasibility and impact of guiding people to pharmacies and telehealth providers in East Africa.

How is your idea unique? (750 characters)

Ada is unique from other health platforms in its ability to provide accurate personalized medical information and guide users to local care options in any part of the world. Vaccine provider maps, e.g. HealthMap Vaccine Finder, are useful but limited in scope as they are solely informative. The dynamic interactions between users and Ada provides unique value for the health ecosystem by accurately identifying those at risk of under immunization, providing tailored suggestions, and tracking immunization uptake. This can generate population health insights on vaccination trends. Our scale also sets us apart: Ada has 190,000+ assessments in Gavi-supported countries, and aims to reach 50 million people worldwide by 2025.

Dr. Martin Hirsch, Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, has a PhD in Neuroscience and a Diploma in Physiology. Hila Azadzoy, Managing Director, Global Health Initiative, is dedicated to using technology for social good, leading our Global Health Initiative to improve access to healthcare in resource-limited countries. Before Ada, Hila was a founding member and Head of Academics at Kiron Open Higher Education, a startup removing barriers to education for refugees.
