ImmuAll: Hunting for the last child

In order to increase immunization coverage in view of caregiver mobility, we intend to provide schedule-specific barcodes on the child’s health card. We will achieve this by placing barcode readers at strategic locations in the urban areas so that wherever the caregiver goes to and settles with the child, the immunisation schedules is up to date.

Explain the innovation (2,500 characters)

Economic output and job opportunities are increasingly concentrated in most African cities. This has been accompanied by a rapid movement of individuals into areas of relative opportunity. The move is arguably positive, as it brings the population into a stronger alignment with jobs, livelihood opportunities, low-cost transportation, and better service delivery. Beneath this development however, Zimbabwean cities are experiencing the downward pressures of urbanisation with over 90% unemployment, and on the other, an upward trend in population growth which is straining service delivery. Such an inverse relationship presents a yawning gap in policy for it has resulted in economic marginalization thus producing spatial poverty traps. These levels of poverty have resulted in extensive mobility, a major challenge in reaching out to children who require immunization schedules as per the national guidelines. We intend to change the health information practice in an exciting yet engaging way by introducing schedule-specific barcodes which, for every clinic visit or during mass drug administration, will be stuck on the child’s health card. Updating the record will be done at clinic, on the caregiver’s mobile phone or at participating public places such as car parks, schools, bus/train stations, churches, market places or shops where we plan to place our networks of mobile barcode readers. Every end of month, our teams will make house-to-house visits to sampled households and audit if the child received immunization services. Information dissemination and media will play a critical role if our proposed project is to be successful. We anticipate that in the long run, shop outlets will adopt the practice as part of corporate social responsibility and extend the barcode scanning services at the point of sale (POS) whenever a caregiver comes with the child health card for an update. We plan to proceed as follows: the first barcode will have detailed information about the child where information will be entered directly at the health facility where the child was born or where the child had the first contact with a health facility. Subsequent barcodes will be for all other schedule-specific immunizations which will be linked to our database.

We will work alongside community health workers, ministries of health, local and internal non-governmental organizations. We will also work with religious, political, and business leaders. The business leaders will play a crucial role because we will use their places at no charge.

How is your idea unique? (750 characters)

We are cognizant of the fact that not all people in urban areas have access to mobile phones, and for that reason, our approach is novel in that it is readily accessible by all people, whether rich or poor. The approach is replicable and easily scalable across diverse communities and even in countries with limited resources. Further, when analysed, data generated by our proposed system will give us detailed information about a child who is meeting all the schedules or one who has missed an appointment and thus institute reminders through a phone message. The project is flexible for it allows us to constantly move around with our barcode readers to places where we can reach out to large volumes of people (car parks, schools, bus/train statio
