EK-JECT
Prefilled,Single use, Auto dispose, low cost, blow fill seal, Self service vaccine applicator that protects caregiver from needle pricks.
Describe what you intend to do and how you'll do it in one to two sentences (required 350 Characters)
We aim to use Ek-ject to decentralise immunisation by empowering caregivers with a self service applicator. This reduces pressure on immunisation camps, makes vaccination accessible and convenient for caregivers leading busy lifestyles and relieves them of anxiety related to hygiene and contamination.Explain the innovation (2,500 characters)
1)The innovation is for urban dwellers whose lifestyles are getting busier by the day. Most of them also live in nuclear families. Kids are sent 8-10 hour schools. In the midst of this, accommodating regular vaccination camp schedules can be challenging. Also due to increased awareness, they are concerned about hygiene and contamination issues faced by mass vaccination camps. Kids are also not very comfortable getting injected by a stranger at the camps. This reduces demand for vaccines. 2) the innovation caters to young caregivers till the age of 40 who are also parents to the kids. They live in cities in nuclear families and both parents work. Kids are sent to whole day schools so they are looked after in their absence. For such people, it is challenging to visit vaccination camps with fixed schedules on a working day, stand in a queue, deal with concerns regarding hygiene and contamination and their kids' insecurities of a stranger injecting them, all on a working day. Ekject is a self service applicator that they can buy from a local pharmacy, and administer to their kids at their own convenience with the assurance that it has been done hygienically and without stressing the kids as they would be more comfortable in a known setting getting vaccinated by their own parents 3)Ekject is a Prefilled,Single use, Auto dispose, low cost, blow fill seal, Self service vaccine applicator that protects caregiver from needle pricks. Vaccines are generally intramuscular injections that are very easy to administer. Caregivers do not need special training to use them. 4) Ekject is manufactured and filled with the drug in a sterile environment and in a tamper proof container. Caregivers have to simply twist off the needle cover, stick the needle into the glutes or arms of the kid at a 90 degree angle, press the dose chamber to collapse and evacuate all the drug in it. The needle is then covered by a built in cap using a simple mechanism after which it can be safely disposed. Since the needle is moulded into the container, it can not be separated and reused. 5) Blow fill seal is a proven, sterile, and robust technique of packaging drugs. Some other innovations like BD uniiject are already developing as easy, single use applicators. 6) By decentralising the process of immunisation in urban areas in Gavi countries, access to immunisation becomes more convenient and less resource intensive. It also addresses concerns of caregivers regarding vaccination.Which part(s) of the world does this innovation target?
