Bandi Trac: an efficient immunization data collection and tracker technology for low resource settings.

We provide a barcode on immunization reminder wristband (Bandi), mobile phones or child health cards which are scanned to gather immunization data, which will then be used to track and remind caregivers in urban and rural areas of their child next vaccination appointment using sms or robocalls depending on caregivers education and religious status.

Explain the innovation (2,500 characters)

BandiTrac solves the problem of poor immunization data records in Africa, and the challenges of caregivers forgetting to take their babies for immunization which leads to untimely and poor compliance to immunization schedules, and incomplete childhood immunization. Donors that finance immunization programs will benefit from BandiTrac as quality data will be gathered in real-time on the number of children immunized in key populations thus promoting effective use of scarce resources. Caregivers in urban areas between the ages of 15 to 49 years will also benefit as they will receive timely customized reminders of their child next immunization date. BandiTrac leverages barcode and mobile health technology to gather accurate immunization data to track and remind caregivers in urban areas of their child next immunization appointment. A barcode is attached to CBPI immunization reminder band (Bandi) worn by babies or caregivers, caregivers mobile phones and/or their child health cards. The barcode is scanned by front line healthcare workers at health facilities to gather key information needed to promote adherence to immunization schedule and to accurately identify number of children immunized, the time and place of immunization. Gathered data goes directly into CBPI data base, after which it is used to track and identify caregivers progress as regards her child immunization journey and remind caregivers of their child next vaccination appointment using customized sms or robocalls depending on caregivers’ tribal language, educational and religious status, . This technology have been used in Canada, as when barcode was integrated into Canadian public health immunization settings, it led to more accurate immunization records and was also more efficient as shown from this study The Bandi Trac innovation can be adopted by the Expanded Programme on Immunization of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) through partnership with CBPI Foundation. Once adopted we distribute our bands to caregivers in urban areas of Ghana or attach our developed barcode to their mobile phones or child health cards, front line health workers will be provided with our barcode scanner mobile application. Information gathered from the health facilities by scanning the barcode and entering the requested data, will be used to know the number of children immunized and aid reminder of caregivers through sending customized sms or robocalls to their mobile phones.

We work with government agencies in charge of immunization programs, health facilities offering immunization services, front line health workers at healthcare facilities, and other key stakeholders.

How is your idea unique? (750 characters)

This idea is unique as it uses a holistic approach to solve supply and demand side challenges of immunization. By gathering accurate data we make forecasting a lot easier as consumption rate in a particular facility is easily determined. We solve issues with demand using a more human centered approach to remind our targets in a customized fashion putting into consideration the socio-cultural context effect on demand for vaccination. CBPI has a unique team composition; we are made up of core medical professionals and IT experts, and have a good corporate governance structure which ensures accountability, credibility, and integrity in our operations.

Emmanuel is a Pharmacist he holds a certificate in Project management in Global health from the University of Washington, and obtained certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from the Lagos Business School Pan-Atlantic University. He plays the role of a Project manager. Bammeke Oyebola Oladoyin is a registered nurse and mid-wife with over 25 years of experience practicing in the area of Maternal and child health. She plays the role of Program manager and consultant. Erioluwa is a nurse with over 7 years experience as an immunization service provider. She plays the role of M&E officer.
