Social Impact through Storytelling

Sometimes, we are so cut off from parts of the world in need that we don't feel the need to help. Just by making these stories visible and accessible to people, we can start to create empathy and awareness around the issues

At lunch today, I came across this pamphlet for Kipepeo, a company that employs impoverished women in Kibera, Kenya to create hand-made greeting cards and then sell them all over the world.

These cards a like little envoys, sending their stories all across the world and informing others about the hardships in Kibera.

How can we be better storytellers? How can we as OpenIDEO and as individuals bring these stories out into the world?

Hi Haiyan,

Storytelling, for me at least, seems to be at the centre of all the challenges. Nowadays, with our tweets and our facebook updates, we're presented with such a fractured storytelling process, which means – unless you're the storyteller/s – it's hard to get much out of it.

Good storytelling is becoming a lost art. Perhaps we could create OpenIDEO story books to tell the stories (through animation or illustration) of the challenges over the past year, where they are now etc.

The new mediums should enhance the stories we tell, not replace them. There's still a real gift in telling a good story, and something so special in hearing/watching/enjoying one.

Great inspiration!
