Connections for Impact

To achieve social impact in our local area, we need support. Share your favorite examples of services, platforms or people that help connect us with the resources and information we need to realise our ideas.

An idea for social impact is only as good as the people and support behind it. In fact a key component of achieving impact is connection – that is, getting the right tools, information and resources in the hands of the right people in order to make change happen.

Think about the wide array of methods that can be used to take ideas for social impact forward into the real world. Examples might include peer-to-peer funding, digital and non-digital platforms, resource matching, communication tools, community networks, etc. For instance, platforms like Kickstarter, Skype, Question Box; networks like mothers’ groups; communication tools like Twitter; and community noticeboards or social connectors like Meet Up, Tweet Ups and town hall talks.

Here are a few questions to get you started:
  • What or who is being connected?
  • How accessible is it (especially for low-income communities)?
  • Does it require specialist knowledge?
  • Is it place-based or remote?
  • What kinds of trusted networks do people have around work, education, food, recreation, activism?

You don't need to consider the details of what the social issue is or the impact they might deliver just yet – but let's think broadly about the options by which people can be connected and what opportunities these offer for various kinds of collaboration before we hit the Concepting phase.

Turntable.fm is a fairly new social media site that allows people to take turns playing music for each other. It is a very basic premise, but leads to a very interesting musical journey!

Peers publicly stating their goals to each other is more likely to inspire action among the whole group than tackling a goal individually would. It's the social virus for getting things done; because your goal matter.

Maybe a way to connect OpenIDEATORS offsite is to enable this platform to cross-inform users about their geographical locations (if they want to share it), or even better publicize events that are organized in specific cities, like on Couchsurfing.

What if we can crowdsource the efforts to realize concepts & ideas through encouraging microvolunteering?

Communities are connections between people, but they vary in size, shape, make-up, and so do the connections between them. Make it easier to target the group you want to impact.

Looking out for support, maybe we don't have to look very far: the nonprofit organization started by IDEO to address poverty-related challenges through design and to encourage the use of our human-centered approach to innovation in the social sector.

Look at the model of 99% Conference hosted by Behance (http://the99percent.com/conference), a relatively small conference (400 capacity, 2 days,), what would an Open IDEO conference centered on social impact look like?
