Inspired by Bruce Mau's 'Bureau of Doing Something About It' ( + concepts of citizen participation ( /open/impact/concepting/a-penny-s-thought-on-the-tube/)
what if OpenIDEO had a travelling design + DO tank, where it visited cities, set up in a shopfront and brought together all the major players to design AND implement solutions to some of that city's biggest social problems.

Citizens would be asked to suggest what issues are important to them & what problems the think+do tank should be addressing, through both analog and digital media (eg,

The think + do tank would then last from 1 week to several months, and be housed in a public place where the public could interact with the design process. It would bring together people from various disciplines (private and public) to respond directly to the issues the public had raised, and to implement small scale solutions.

What kind of social impact does this concept achieve?

The concept aims to bring the global thinking of OpenIDEO into a local context, to ensure solutions are site specific, locally relevant and include the end users in the design process through asking the public what local challenges the think+do tank should be addressing. Through forming a team to design + implement solutions, small scale impact is created within a short timeframe, allowing for further collaboration and development in the long term.

What skills are required to take this concept forward?

partnership with local government to fund and run the think tank.

How do you envision this concept being supported financially?

Maybe this could start with all the cities IDEO has a physical location in? I like it :)

or to expand IDEO's design thinking and impact in the cities IDEO doesnt have a physical location in - like us out in Australia !!!

Good idea Charlotte - maybe somewhere like Adelaide to slightly span the Australian time zones and in conjunction with the UK and USA locations would provide almost 24 hour coverage.
