Ben Franklin and Bone Marrow
We learned from the "Ben Franklin Effect" that people appreciate those _for_whom_ they've done a favor. What small, easily-grantable favors can we request of potential donors? The result will magnify the effectiveness of our subsequent efforts.

It's cool to need stuff
Modern western culture downplays dependency on others, instead encouraging us to "do it ourselves." However, the strength and flexibility of an ecological system is measured by the number of "need relationships" it contains. Let's rebrand "need."

Make it the Default
The recent book "Nudge" analyzes our human tendencies in decision-making, and one conclusion is that people will usually follow preset defaults (one less decision to worry about). Why not make registering to be a bone marrow donor the default?

Use pictures of people of underrepresented ethnicities
This seems obvious but if there's a major need to get minority donors, then it's important to be intentional when choosing imagery in campaigns to consider using minority imagery as the majority of images in the campaigns.

The lemonade stand.
No one with a heart can pass by a lemonade stand without buying a glass/cup at the very least.

The Bone Marrow Donation Journey
Building on the different things people have shared so far, and the excellent process that Vineet shared on the 100k Cheeks site, here's a simplified journey of the bone marrow donation process. Each step has opportunities for improvement.

It Hurts So Good
Bone marrow donation is not as easy or painless as blood donation. And, many people may be afraid of the process. Instead of hiding the painful part, maybe we should embrace it. The pain/sacrifice can save someones life. It hurts so good!

The ice cream truck -- RUN!
Building on Geoff's inspiration around the lemonade stand, I couldn't help but think of how excited we used to get when the ice cream truck came into our neighborhood.

Medical advances have given us an Opportunity to Rebrand - it's not as scary as most people think!
~75% of bone marrow donations now occur through a method called peripheral blood stem cell donation (PBSC), which is a completely non-surgical, non-invasive procedure. What if we asked for blood or cell donation instead of bone marrow donation?

Formerly known as: the life and times of the kiwifruit.
Building on Shual's re-branding of bone marrow inspiration, the story of the kiwifruit -- originally known as the Chinse gooseberry -- was super inspiring to me.

Turning 18 means cigarettes, voting...and bone marrow donation!
Make joining the bone marrow registry one of the "cool" things teens get to do when they turn 18. Hold drives at high schools so students become accustomed to the idea of joining.
Cause and Effect
It seems to me that a very important emotion for people is a sense of accomplishment. It may be that the sole experience of having bone marrow extracted from ones body does not provoke this emotion.
