Innovations in Donation

What are some innovative campaigns, services, or technologies that are driving people to donate?

What are some innovative campaigns, services, or technologies that are driving people to donate?

Consider the infinite ways in which we are able to donate: time, money, bone marrow, etc. Who is advancing donation technology, increasing the number of donors, or reducing the barriers to donating in underserved communities?

Scour the Web, talk with your friends and family, even ask your doctors for thoughts and ideas about the innovative work being done in donation. Remember, the broader your search and thinking, the more Inspirations we can gather to create new solutions.

What if we drew from the cigarette package warnings? (but maybe with a little more positive spin) Could we put the story of a donor, or someone in need of a bone marrow transplant on Q-tip packaging?

We're about to have our own bone marrow registration drive at IDEO and the site MarrowDrives.org has been so inspirational/helpful. They host a full toolkit of helpful items and I had to share. (click the image below to see the supercool animation)

According to a recent discovery, a potential bone-marrow donor's cells could be incubated and grown indefinitely, providing stem cells to be used in multiple transplant therapies.

Girl Scout cookies have become such a part of the American tradition that even the thought of a thin mint brings a smile to most of our faces. What if we had the option to buy the cookies we know and love with membership in the bone marrow registry?

Collecting personal experiences. Connecting to different Cultures through Storytelling. What if there was a way to use the concept of StoryCorps to collect stories from donors, recipients, and potential recipients combined with mobile clinics?

What if cotton swab companies printed something on their products and their packaging about how easy it is to be tested for your bone marrow type? Qtips could engage what's between people's ears, while keeping those clean too.

The Obama Campaign did it better than almost any other campaign I can recall in the last few years. The team used the myObama system to allow people to create their own profile, connect with other supporters near them, and to reach out to new donors.

A recent ad campaign to increase Hepatitis B awareness relies on high-impact tactics. One ad in particular shows ten beauty queens in a pageant photo, each with sash and glowing smile. The text asks us, “Which one deserves to die?”
