Youth-led Mobile Library
Kolkata kids run a cycle-powered book-van to distribute books to children in rural areas.
We've noted a number of mobile platforms so far but I particularly like this one as it's run by children, for children. A local club came up with the mobile library idea but "to grow interest, we thought that only children should be engaged to take this initiative ahead. Now these kids do all the work, they ride in the van, take it to different localities and distribute books. They go to each house and call out to the little children to take the books." The cycle van carries about 150 books and is called 'Boi Gari' (Books Van) Read more:
The children not only read out stories to less privileged kids – they also teach them reading skills.
The Challenge Brief
This model involves external provision of the vehicle and help with obtaining products (largely second-hand books) but leaves distribution to children – providing a learning experience for both user and vendor.
