“The problem in Colombia is not the lack of resources, but the lack of means to give them to the people” told me a marketing teacher one day. This can’t be more true. This statement make me realize that the malnutrition in Colombia is not the consequence of not having enough food, but it was due to the lack of a system to carry this food to the communities at a low price and to teach them what is good for their health, because most of the common diseases are due to bad nutritional habits.

The community nutrition centeris a project that will educate people in order to have good nutritional habits and will solve the problem of distribution channels of healthy food, to give them the opportunity to change their life style into a healthier one.

The community nutrition center consists of a place that has several areas:

·A kitchen: in which people can come and cook healthy meals with fresh ingredients.

·A food store room:to store the food in a safe place.

·A dinning room: because eating is an activity that must be done in an exclusive place in order to eat consciously and receive all the food benefits.

·A recreation area (it can be the same dinning room): where people can come and learn more about healthy nutritional habits. The idea is to teach this knowledge through the experience of food either, with the food preparation or during a healthy meal. This is the best way to learn and have a good time!

·Community restaurant: if people don’t have the time or the resources to cook they can buy a meal at a low price. They will be saving money at the same time they know they are eating healthy food.

·Nutritionist consultation: people with specific health problems can come and have a free consultation with a nutritionist.

·A garden: the vegetables that grow here are organic and can be used to cook healthy meals.

How do you envision this idea making money?

As a business, this project can be seen as a foundation that has to be managed by a group of people that are in charge of the maintenance and improvement of the center. The initial resources can be sponsored by an NGO or the government itself. In order to be sustainable they receive also money from the restaurant and the food they sell in the community. Public services can be sponsored by the companies in charged of water, gas and electricity. And finally, is not about receiving money, but about saving money. The people will in a short term the money they save eating at the nutrition center.

How does this idea create social impact, particularly around improving health?

The malnutrition is a national problem in Colombia. In 2009, they approved the “obesity law” in which the obesity problem must be considered as a disease which must be treated and the most important: prevented. (see .pdf attached for further explanations) A project that seeks improving the eating habits will be attractive to the government, theNGO’sandalsotheprivatecompaniesthatlookfowardtosolvethisproblema in time in order to prevent future diseases. (Also, in a long-term, it will save lots of money in the health care system). For the community this idea will be attractive because they would know that they have a place were they can eat a wide variety of fresh food at a low price and with all the nutritional requirements.

How does this idea add social value at every step of the process?

The nutrional educationis a hard subject to talk about because most of the time the ones that talk about it are the doctors and they make it a boring topic. As it is an intangible thing, people are not willing to pay for a thing they consider also a luxury. As this community nutrition center is build, nutrition becomes something tangible. The people will feel they have nutrition as something they can touch, see and enjoy, and the most important: as something of their own because they put a little of them in the project.

What are the short term steps we could take to implement this idea tomorrow?

•Talking to the people on the community and explaining them the project. •Start identifying the possible leaders that can manage the project. •Make an estimate of the prices of the food on a Wholesale store. •Start talking to the government and NOG’s in order to find sponsors. •Look for a place to build the center.

It is interesting concept. I also agree with the point "mobile would be the best element to reach out further. " If we have a mobile app about the healthy food with high nutition, it is not only can convenient to teach people how to choose the healthy foods, but also can educate people to have a healthy habits. The app is good way for people which is busy for working. The mobile app not only saving people's time, but also is easy to downloaded in the any smartphones. I will promote this good idea.
