Tele-medicina

This business idea is about bringing more complex health care to rural areas using IT, therefore diminishing the risk of complications by providing direct evaluation of the issue

In rural areas, the clinics and hospitals that exist can only provide "1st level" care, that is, basic consults from doctors that require little equipment and no specialist. Whenever a patient needs a more complex exam or the opinion of a specialist, they have to go to the Manizales, which takes time and can end up being very costly.
What about implementing a system that would use information technology, for example under the form of a computer program, to transfer patient's information directly to the appropriate specialist. It would be equipped with the necessary tools for taking pictures, analysing blood and blood pressure, and the computer programs that would guide the user (be it a nurse, or a doctor) through the examination process required for each type of specialist.

This would allow for quicker identification of possible health issues, and eliminate often useless travels to the city and consults.

How do you envision this idea making money?

Like Bienestar, this service would be offered at a small cost. Since the 2nd alternative is to spend a day travelling to the city, paying for transportation and meals, it would be a good business solution. For the pilots already implemented (one by Universidad de Caldas, for example), only 7% of the people who are assessed by a Tele-Medicina system, actually have to be treated in the city afterwards.

How does this idea create social impact, particularly around improving health?

This Tele-Medicina service would improve access to higher level of health for people of rural areas, therefore preventing sicknesses from worsening.

How does this idea add social value at every step of the process?

This service could be coupled with specialized training for nurses to be able to run it effectively. The installation and maintenance would create jobs within the community.

What are the short term steps we could take to implement this idea tomorrow?

First, we would have to assess all the existing similar ideas in the market. We would also need to determine exactly the needs and the services that could be provided through this system, by working closely with Caldas's medical community.

There are a couple of concepts related to tele-medicine that have already been posted:

Or even Krassimira's ReMeDi concept: http://bit.ly/ppjQX7
I'm sure the discussions around each one of these can help nurture and complement this one!
