New concepts in Agriculture Engineering to Improve Food Security, Health, and Income

In the Inspiration Phase several authors have suggested new methods for improving the agriculture and water supply for low income farmers in Caldas. These ideas will improve the food security, water security, health, nutrition, and income of BOP farmers in Caldas. HSBM needs to review these ideas and try as many of them as they can so that BOP farmers will have a variety of paths to success.

Several authors have suggested new methods for improving agriculture and the water supply for low income farmers in Caldas.  These ideas will improve the food security, water security, health, nutrition and income for BOP farmers in Caldas.  HSBM needs to review the cost and feasibility of implementing each of these ideas to determine which ones can be implemented.   There are a lot of poor farmers so a lot of ideas must be implemented.  This will give farmers a variety of paths to success.

How do you envision this idea making money?

Selling new agriculture products and providing a better food supply for humans and animals will increase the income of BOP farmers. They will be able to buy more expensive agricultural supplies as they make more money

How does this idea create social impact, particularly around improving health?

BOP farmers will have better access to fruit, vegetables, grains, meat, and dairy products. In turn, their health will improve due to the increase of vitamins, calcium, protein, potassium, etc that they consume. With added income, they will be able to buy medicines and pay for medical advice and procedures

How does this idea add social value at every step of the process?

These ideas will provide subsistence BOP farmers with 1) Better food and water security 2) Better diets 3) New cash crops to increase their income

What are the short term steps we could take to implement this idea tomorrow?

Provide BOP farmers in Caldas with the supplies they need to implement these food, health, and water security inspirations.. To quote the former head of the Cropping Systems Program at the International Rice Research Institute: "The importance of farmer participation in the testing of new technologies can hardly be exaggerated. There is a strong temptation to run on-farm tests under the management of researchers to ensure proper controls but such trials do not reflect the true management characteristics of the technology. In the final analysis, it is the farmer who will manage the crops."

I really like this idea and as you point out is incorporates many inspirations and concepts floating around for this challenge.

Maybe this could be partnered with University agriculture courses in the capital Manizales as well as local agricaultural industries.

There are four groups of people that help multiply impact of this concept
1) The Agriculture Engineering professors and their students at the University of Caldas
2) The Bishop of Manizales who is helped by his priests, nuns, and his staff of development workers
3) The Department of Caldas's Secretary of Economics and AgroIndustry as well as his/her staff
4) Local agricultural industries that sell farm equipment and supplies to poor farmers
It is important that poor farmers try these ideas rather than conducting on farm tests under the management of researchers. The conditions of test farms at universities is quite a bit different than actual farmers under the management of poor farmers.
