Rooftops for Health

An affordable asbestos encapsulating paint that seals-in "friable" asbestos, and reduces exposure to air-borne particulates. Rooftops for Health's goal is to establish a social business that will produce and sell asbestos abatement paints within the region of Caldas. Profits will go towards funding longer-term asbestos removal programs.

Rooftops for Health proposes the sale of an affordable, safe-to-use, water-based, VOC compliant, asbestos encapsulant (a paint).  Asbestos encapsulation, AKA "encasement" paint technologies are a tested and proven solution for asbestos abatement.  This asbestos sealant is a readily available product on the open market, however, it is not produced in Colombia.   Rooftops for Health's goal is to establish a social business that will produce and sell asbestos abatement paints within the region of Caldas.

Asbestos remediation is an expensive undertaking when considering the cost of proper remediation and disposal.  Property owners even in affluent settings often defer new construction, or find clever alternatives so as to not disturb or deal with the asbestos problem directly. Rooftops for Health acknowledges this capital intensive barrier, and thus offers an affordable interim solution for asbestos abatement. A portion of the profits generated from the sale of paint will go towards long-term investments in an appropriate disposal infrastructure.

To promote and educate the product and its merits, the Rooftops for Health project will host a series of competitions and events, which will invite artists and designers from around the world to propose and execute rooftop murals with the goal of raising awareness about asbestos related respiratory disease.  Finalists will use the paint in strategically picked locations in Caldas to allow for the most impactful display of the issue.

Look forward to your feedback and comments.

How do you envision this idea making money?

Rooftops for Health will generate revenue through the manufacture and sale of paint for asbestos remediation.

How does this idea create social impact, particularly around improving health?

By sealing in "friable" asbestos, the paint limits its airborne potential and reduces related respiratory diseases.

How does this idea add social value at every step of the process?

For ever single roof that is remediated, awareness of the problem is broadcasted and profits from sold paint go towards investing in a longer-term (capital intensive) asbestos disposal solution.

What are the short term steps we could take to implement this idea tomorrow?

Find a local artist to paint a single roof with this paint.

Russell,

That's what I discovered too. Removing asbestos is soo expensive because of the necessary precautions that often it is left unaddressed.

Very nice. When I was researching asbestos, it seemed like the asbestos rooftop material was the most difficult to remove and replace. This seems like a great solution and I love the artistic aspect.
