Sub-Irrigated Planters (SIPs) are the most efficient and foolproof way to grow tons of food anywhere with a little sunshine. Kids can make their own SIP using two 5-gallon food-grade buckets. The SIPs remain free of weeds and need watering only once every 3 days.
Making the SIP then planting, growing and harvesting their own tomato or any other vegetable they fancy will boost the child's sense of accomplishment tremendously. Each child is very likely to eat the veggie they grew themselves, providing good health as a "side-effect". The SIPS are portable enough to take home at the end of the school year.
Here are some ways to integrate the making and growing process into the school curriculum:
-Learn Economics (calculate ROI, selling produce at the farmer's market, saving money by not buying vegetables at the supermarket)
-Learn Biology (photosynthesis, nutrition basics)
-Learn Physics (adhesion and cohesion of water molecules)
