WASSUP (Water Amenities Sanitation Services Upgrading Program) is an initiative to improve the public ablution facilities in the township of Diepsloot, Johannesburg, by residents for residents. Initiated by Global Studio (see www.theglobalstudio.com) in 2007 , the project is now led by Diepsloot locals who have worked to repair the toilets, drains and taps in their township. The work has a direct impact on the daily lives of an estimated 70,000 residents who have not had access to adequate sanitation infrastructure.
A website has been started - see www.wassupdiepsloot.com - which is currently under construction.
WASSUP Diepsloot is an innovative program in that residents started fixing their own taps and now it has expanded to fix toilets, drains, taps in an effort to clean up the streets and allow access to adequate sanitation services for all 100,000 residents. The program also incorporates informal education to show users how to properly use and take care of the new infrastructure through edutainment, painting and drama performances, which works to involve children in the project too.
