Ventilation Improved Pit latrine, Ladakh

Druk White Lotus School, Ladakh, India. Arup Associates. Described as the "world's best toilet" by Cameron Sinclair, Architecture for Humanity. Ladakh, like many remote regions, does not have a waterborne sewage system. Arup developed a waterless "ventilation improved pit" latrine, which uses passive solar engineering to encourage airflow and eliminate odours.

It would be interesting to see what model is being used in these toilets. I read an article in WIRED UK about waterless toilets, and it did seem like there were many sanitation issues in lab designed technology. http://www.wired.com/magazine/tag/waterless/
