At the online University of the People, anyone with a high school diploma can take classes toward a degree in business administration or computer science — without standard tuition fees (though exams cost money). Founder Shai Reshef hopes that higher education is changing "from being a privilege for the few to a basic right, affordable and accessible for all." It would cost about $4000 total to get an accredited degree from them. This is much more affordable than the standard $45000 total at least for four years of schooling.

What is a provocation or insight that might inspire others during this challenge?

I think it's a very interesting approach to both cut costs and benefit the students by only offering certain degrees that will result in jobs for the students. He decided on Business Administration and Computer Science because those are the degrees that ultimately get people jobs and allow them to escape poverty. I feel this is an insight into practically thinking about affordable tuition.

Great post, Madeline. I wonder what could be done to increase the perceived value of a degree from University of the People for employers. As the goal is get employment, it would be key to somehow translate that online degree's value to companies. Thanks for the share.
