Epidemiology is a field of study that is related to finding patterns of health and diseases. It is related to topics like public health, policy decisions, preventive health care, clinical research practices, and so on. This is one of the most famous courses that students opt for better career options. So, they get epidemiology assignments as well in which they need to prove their subject knowledge.

Now, a very important topic you get assigned when you are writing an assignment in this is the study designs. Epidemiological studies are all about finding the link between human health effects and the causes for the same. These studies are usually of two types, descriptive or analytical.

Descriptive studies are used to describe diseases such as exposure and diseases in a population. They are used to design hypotheses. On the other hand, analytical studies are used to evaluate between an exposure and a disease. These are mainly used to test the hypothesis.

There are various types of epidemiological studies that are used for experimenting and observing designs. These are:


1. Experimental studies

Experimental studies are also known as intervention studies. This is the kind of study used to analyze medicines that are under the developmental process.


 a) Randomized control trial

This is a type of scientific experiment that is used to reduce bias during the testing process to check the effectiveness of new treatments. It uses random methods for the same. 

 b) Non-randomized quasi-experimental field trial

This is a type of experimental study where people are allocated with non-random different interventions. 

 2. Non-experimental studies

Non-experimental studies are where a researcher cannot control, manipulate, or alter variables. It relies on interpretation, observation, or interactions for the conclusion.

 a) Population-based

Non-experimental studies can be categorized on the basis of the population, which are further divided into:

 i. Descriptive health survey

This is a health survey that is explained in a descriptive manner. It uses a quantitative and qualitative approach for the survey.

 ii. Analytic ecological study

These studies are conducted to test a specific hypothesis. This is used to identify the samples of subjects, the information, and the outcome.

 b) Individual-based

Non-experimental studies can be categorized on the basis of individuals, which is further divided into the following:

 i. Descriptive case reports and series

These are used to describe the case reports in a detailed form to understand the things in a clearer way.

 ii. Analytic studies

Analytic studies can again be divided into three different studies:

 1. Cross-sectional study

It is a type of observational study where it analyzes the data from a population, or a representative subset or at a specific point in time.

 2. Case-control study

This is a study where two groups with different outcomes are identified and compared on the basis of the causal attribute.

 3. Cohort study 

This is a longitudinal study that samples a cohort, performing a cross-section at intervals through times.

 These are some study designs that can be implemented in your epidemiology assignment to score the best grades.
