How About Scholarships?

All individuals have unique talents and strengths, so why not express them to colleges?

Who is the target audience for your idea and how does it reimagine the cost of college?

For many students, college applications are synonymous to the sleep-less nights of worry. Many students are stressed about the financial process, especially scholarships, which create more pressure rather than reward students for their effort in high school.

Scholarships should not be given to specific students for exceeding certain expectations.  Rather, scholarships should be given based on certain guidelines.  A student should be given a certain amount of scholarship based on his or her family's financial background.  In addition, and more importantly, high schools should implement a Portfolio Program.  In this, each student should be required to make a portfolio that demonstrates his or her strengths and weaknesses, accomplishments and failures.  In senior year, the amount of scholarship money for seniors should be dependent on the quality of their portfolios.

What early, lightweight experiment can you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

As an experiment, high schools should implement the Portfolio Program for one year and see the results.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

How can this Program be financially and societally supported?

This idea emerged from

  • A group brainstorm
  • A student collaboration
  • An Individual

Great idea share! You'll be curious to check out Philip's like-minded idea: https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/higher-ed/ideas?page=3&order=recently_published&direction=desc

Also, here's a helpful tip, it'll be helpful to use your first name and last name in your profile instead of your Yahoo email address. This will help the OpenIDEO community engage with you.
