The idea is wonderful way to initiate a dialogue across generations! It would go a long way in preserving heritage and promoting a healthy, wholesome lifestyle

I was wondering if it would be possible for Grandmas to engage with their 'Grandchildren' in real time. What if Grandmothers could occasionally stream live cooking classes which can be viewed by people across the world. Learners could ask the Granny's questions directly and even share images of their progress.

Such interactions would make the Granny realize, how her secret recipes are reaching and touching the lives of people. For 'Grandchildren', it would be a more intimate and direct way of learning, rather than reading a boring, mundane text.

This is a great idea, I love it. I'm interested in finding out more about the health side of things. Are these recipes really 'healthier'? I would want to think about how you can widen participation to include not just people who want to (re)connect with their heritage, but also millenials, foodies and urbanites who are looking for immediate benefits offered by the app. Maybe the Granny idea becomes the starting point.

What happens when you have made the meal and enjoyed it with your friends? How can this experience feed back into the app and provide another level of engagement for the user?

Love the idea that the app would tell you where you can find local ingredients needed for the recipe, in your area. Very nice idea, I would definitely use it with my granny (if she knew how to cook...!)

This is an adorable concept. I like the addition of "preserve our traditions," since this would be a big add value above and beyond sharing recipes and helpful advice. Multi-generational connections are so important.

Thanks Jillian!
You are right, multi-generational connections are very important, especially in this dynamic world. :D

I love this idea. People connect through food and passing on these traditions across generations is a great way to stay engaged with each other and our elders in a fast moving world. I also see a great opportunity for incorporating some form of mentorship/advice under the activities category. Many young people today struggle with making major life decisions and the perspective of elders is something that is critical in finding the right path.

I love this idea! I am going to use the hashtag right now and start posting some Nana recipes. (But seriously, this is the idea that has the multicultural piece built in to health - everyone has a grandmother.) Thank you so much.

Thanks Deb!
Thanks to this amazing OpenIDEO platform we had the opportunity to develop this particular idea. Our grandparents, specially grandmothers are fundamentally important
to connect us with our culture. The Human-Centered approach has been an incredible tool to go beyond the surface.

Looks great but might be a huge scope to start! Maybe it's worth to try narrowing down to a MVP choosing the most relevant field of application according to the specific place you might be interested to test ... I'm from Italy, where grandma are more than willing to share their cooking "secrets", therefor I would start definitely from food, but it's really up on your situation! Leveraging on the momentum of a targeted #wisegrannyfood, should help streamlining #wisergernnycleaning, #wisegrannysays and making it become a wider platform.

Thanks Marco!
Yes, definitely our project must be a phased initiative, and the food could be one of the firsts stages of the idea.
Hope we can see recipies from grannies all over the world, the food connect people and tradition in a very powerfull way.
Thanks again Marco !

Congrats on your winning idea Maria and team! We love how you've fleshed out the potential for this idea to help people lead healthier lives since the beginning of the Refinement Phase. What an amazing journey it has been. We've also been inspired by how you've engaged with the community in a human-centered way as you iterated on this idea. Looking ahead to the next step, we would love for you to share your story in the Healthy Lives Impact Phase. The Impact Phase that's currently open is a space where the OpenIDEO community can share updates on how our projects are progressing beyond the challenge. For reference, here's a template for writing an Impact phase story: http://ideo.pn/1U9DrSN Well done team!

Hi Wisegranny Team,
I really like this app! I was thinking instead of uploading/downloading, granny can take a picture of the recipe. The software could transfer it into a template that allows to share over social media channels. What an awesome way to preserve culture and heritage.

I agree! Much kudos to the team!!!

Hi Wisegranny team! Love the potential collaboration with Swapna's idea. Keep us posted on how it goes! It looks like you created some potential granny personas – it was so fun reading about them! Do you have feedback from other grannys that this is something they would be interested in? Or perhaps feedback from potential end users about what would encourage them to start using an app like this? I think that would be really relevant at this stage in your idea!

Likewise, to echo Joanna's comment, we'd love for you to put your mockups in front of potential users in your local community. Check out this helpful DesignKit reference: http://www.designkit.org/methods/57
Looking forward to any feedback that you might receive!

Dear Wisegranny team,

Great concept and lots of good partnership opportunities! It might be helpful to test your digital designs in small focus groups of potential end users. Especially as you are targeting Hispanic communities living abroad, it would be important that they can identify with the Granny personas.

Good work!

Best,

Charlotte

Photo of Swapna Bellare

Hi Maria,
OpenIdeo is interested to see us collaborate to make our ideas reach out to a larger Hispanic segment. Since, your app is focused towards ethnic recipes (conserving traditions), and mine addresses in eliminating consumer's pain-point (control food cravings), I think, together we can partner to exchange resources that are needed to make our respective apps successful.
My App pulls data from different databases, to provide healthy and delicious recommendations to people who want to control bad cravings. Since, it is database heavy, I was thinking of leveraging your database to get information about heritage foods and recipes. In return, I can promote our partnership which will drive customer traffic to your app, who are interested in heritage recipes.
Hypothetically, for me it will eliminate excess work to create an additional database and for you it will increase your customer traffic.
Please do check to ensure the app feature section on database, if this is something that interests you.
Thanks in advance!

Rafael and Sebastian,
If you have time take a look at the other ideas that OpenIDEO highlighted in their comment linked below. Are there opportunities to collaborate? Can conversation bring new thinking to each other's projects?

Hi Maria and team. Thanks for sharing your idea here!
I just came upon an organization that is doing work that I think you might find inspiring and relevant to your idea. "Oldways - Health Through Heritage." http://oldwayspt.org/about-us/our-mission
One program is "A Taste of African Heritage: The African Heritage Community Cooking Program."
http://oldwayspt.org/programs/african-heritage-health/a-taste-african-heritage-cooking-classes
The video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aBKAF_qzKA#t=25) is very informative. The outcomes they report in terms of change in eating habits such as cooking more regularly at home, eating more vegetables, and also weight loss amongst participants, are good. (This is verbally reported on their video. Not sure if this is linked to statistics on their website.)
The organization also has information on Traditional Latino Diets with a Latino Food Pyramid and Toolkit/Vida Latino. http://oldwayspt.org/resources/latino-living

Have you considered using videos for simple cooking demonstrations by Granny's, or to visually show different spices, vegetables etc.?

Looking forward to watching the idea develop! Good luck!

Hi all!
Great to hear that you are showing your Idea to target users. Who are they? Are they the grandmothers who will be contacted for their advice, the grandkids who will be interviewing their grandparents and posting advice, or the App and Website Users looking for advice? or all of them?

One thought - You mention that grandchildren and grandmothers will bond using this App. I agree that is one of the great things about it! There is another important group of Latin Americans living abroad that can facilitate knowledge exchange. They are new mothers, living apart from their mothers and grandmothers, but who rely on them for information on child rearing/parenting. This information includes feeding practices, traditional rituals around birth, approach to common childhood ailments, parenting advice, and cooking advice.
I am a pediatrician in NYC with experience serving children/families in low income communities, many are immigrant families, many from Latin America. In my experience new moms call their mothers, if possible, when they have questions about their children's health and well being. These "grandmothers" often live in impoverished rural communities without access to computers and internet. They will not be able to use WiseGranny directly but their daughters abroad can. (Some of the families abroad may not have computers/internet in their home but can access this in the greater community.) These new moms are a great source for accessing and sharing information and wisdom from their home countries. How can this be captured? What kind of outreach can you do abroad to engage these women? Perhaps outreach with organizations that provide social services or health services for immigrant families?

I see from your comment to Joanna above that you are using a prototyping website. Cool! There are also many tools here on the OpenIDEO website. If you have time check them out. Your team might enjoy using them for this project or others. https://openideo.com/content/resources

Tip - When you post your Updates it helps everyone reading here recognize that you have posted new information by writing UPDATE, with the Month/Date - next to WiseGranny - on the Title line.

Do you plan on having a hashtag in Spanish as well?

Looking forward to the updates!

Hi all!
Not sure if you are considering videos on your website/app. If so check out this you tube channel.....Cookin With Grandmas ...... a tour through different Latin American countries learning to cook different local dishes with different abuelas.

Maria and team, to build on Bettina's comment earlier it'd be great to tell us a bit more about who your target users are. It'd be fantastic to put what you've developed so far in front of real people in your community. Collecting and integrating feedback from your potential users will help your idea in the people that you're designing for. We see you've already created a "Feedback" section in your idea post - it'd be great to feature any notable feedback under this section as progress. Looking forward to the next update guys!

Shane, we updated the user and granny profiles, we´re working on the final user feedback, to have a easy and accesible app.
Thanks for stay tuned with our idea !

Photo of Joanna Spoth
Team

Maria & Team! I love that this idea builds on traditions. I can't wait to see the idea develop and I'd like to echo's Shane's idea to create a user experience map. How do you envision the app working for the end user?

Photo of Maria Paula Machado
Team

Hi Joanna, Thanks for your comment.

We thought that the app is for people who are interested to be the medium between grandma and her recipes (Media: grandchildren), we are considering create an app accessible to everyone.
In the co-creation process we have considered use Flat design, visual thinking and infographics principles, creating an UX efficient, different and enjoyable, also in the oder hand we have considered too, use real images of grannies to create a empathic experience (bond between de app and the people)

We are development the app, to show de user experience map, and an approach to a protoype (using https://popapp.in)

What do you think?
We appreciate all the feedback you can give to us.

Photo of Joanna Spoth
Team

I love that you're developing the app on a prototyping website! I can't wait to see it – don't forget to keep us updated. I too (like Alper!) am curious how you plan on making the app accessible to Grandma. I love your idea of incorporating pictures. We know that Grandmas LOVE their grandchildren..I wonder if there's a way to incorporate photo sharing of grandkids with this idea.

Photo of Maria Paula Machado
Team

Hi Joanna Thanks.
Today we have an other meetup at Bogota, Colombia, we will prototype the idea with the team and other people.
We are very excited with the results that can be obtained.

We hope update the idea with new results soon.

Hi Joanna,
The post is already updated. :)

Love the updated visuals, user experience, and content, Maria & team! I think providing a space for people to upload their family recipes, health practices, and words of wisdom is a really interesting way to create holistically healthy lives. I'm wondering about a media tie-in. How might you promote #wisegrannysays or find wide scale ways to get a large volume of people using the app across generations?

Photo of Alper Yaglioglu

Rocking updates Bogota Meetup team! I'll make sure to share my grandma's tips&tricks on Twitter.

Hi Alper,
Thanks for the comments, we are so excited with this idea. :)

Photo of Maria Paula Machado
Team

Hi Joanna,
Thanks for your help and support in the process, :)
We are so happy with the first step of our idea.

As a team we are thinking as one strategy (we are planning others) in create partnerships with mass media, maybe use familiar faces (singers, actors, writers, etc) who can share their grannies photos and stories around healthy lives, cause we need to inspire people to build a new healthy community, make Wise Granny viral and create the Grandma's legacy that endures for generations.

Photo of Joanna Spoth
Team

LOVE that!!

Photo of Alper Yaglioglu
Team

That's a sweet idea! Is there any celebrity in your mind who is active on Twitter and would be eager to spread the word?

Photo of Shane Zhao
Team

Lovely updates Maria and team! As you continue to develop Wisegranny, it'd be helpful to indicate how you're incorporating feedback from the OpenIDEO community and your potential users. Perhaps create a section in your post titled "Feedback" to highlight the progress of the feedback loop. Excited to see the next update!

Hi all. Shakira might be a good celebrity to approach. She has 33 million twitter followers. She is very active in philanthropy particularly focusing on young vulnerable children - early childhood development, health and nutrition - as per her website. http://www.shakira.com/philanthropy
https://twitter.com/shakira?lang=en

Photo of Sebastián González
Team

Thanks Bettina!
She´s one of the first that we thought can help us to spread the info about the web-app

Photo of Anisah Parks
Team

Hi Maria,

You are on point with this idea! I think leveraging celebrity or brand influencers is a powerful way to ignite users to contribute their own recipes and advice from Grandma. People react to personal stories, and having access to read about a popular singer, actress or blogger's experience with their grandma's cooking is a foolproof way to activate your community. Plus the lifespan of influencer content never gets old—you can share it across social platforms and new users will always see it as fresh content.

I also recommend tapping into the nutrition and healthy community that already has a similar conversation going—the users in the health community with a latino heritage will be an easy demographic to convert into WiseGranny users. Best of luck for this app!

Photo of Sebastián González
Team

Anisah thank you for your kind comment, hope you stay tuned with the development of the idea.

Photo of Bettina Fliegel
Team

Nice updates team! Seeing the photos of the grandparents looking on as the grandkid is working the phone/app it reminds me of grandparents I know here in the US. They are not facile with phone apps. Also it is hard to read text and see photos on the small screens. To be inclusive for grandparents who want to use the app themselves to see photos and videos, share etc. etc. have you considered creating an App for IPADs/tablets?

I see that the grandchild and Granny can share a profile. Can multiple grandchildren share a profile with a Granny?

Photo of Sebastián González
Team

Yes Betina, the app must be responsive for multiple devices such tablets/ipad.
The idea with the profile it´s that everyone can see the granies profile, and the grannies can see the user profile. We´re trying to make the app easy and accesible
As always, thanks you Betina :)

Photo of Edgar De la Cruz
Team

I love your idea congratulations, now I think they could expand their idea and consider other people who could use the app, not just family and friends could use and share, from my point of view might include young adults living alone and away from their families, often eating or cooking traditional food makes you feel at home and not miss much, on the other hand many of the young adults do not eat healthy for the various activities we do so this app may also work in this territory.

Turning to issues of design, I wonder what is the format of the content, text or video? in some cases read recipes in smart phones is not comfortable because the screen size is small, I think the best thing for this app is to make small tutorials maybe in video format like "Vine" or "Buzzfeed Food" that might make them simple and useful. You could even add a tutorial "how to make your video" on your app.

I wondered beyond of ranking the best grandmothers, there any other reward for them? I find it very cute the idea of putting in contact with the grandmothers and share photos and videos with them, I thought that perhaps a more banal reward could be a bounty system in which each recipe to share get something in return (for example passes theater, cinema, etc.) that could be of interest to them and could get more people to come together and make community.

One more time, congratulations!

Photo of Sebastián González
Team

Thanks Edgar, all those ideas are very inspiring.
The videos are one issue that we want to have, we´re looking for presernt that interfase.
The idea of the reward it´s awsome, surely we gonna take it for development! It´s really really cool.
Thanks again for your kind comment!

Photo of Bettina Fliegel
Team

Hi.
Have you considered audio for this idea? Grandparents sharing stories with their grandkids on how community, family, friends, food culture and physical activities contribute to wellness and a well lived life? Maybe at the end of a story there can be a lead in to a recipe that is posted on the app?

Telemundo has many radio station affiliates. Maybe the stations can advertise WiseGranny and play clips for their audience?

Photo of Ian Wilkinson
Team

Hi Maria. This is a great idea. I think that looking at grandma's ideas and experiences is a great way to keep traditions alive. I have a similar concept in the Healthy Traditional Food Network idea. It's important to involve the younger generation to make sure the experiences are passed on and saved. I'm wondering how the App might work across different types of devices - especially non-smartphones. What sort of platform are you thinking of creating that might be able to cope with this?

Photo of Sebastián González
Team

Thanks for your comment Ian.
We dont have the knowledge in the tecnical issues, that´s something that OpenIDEO could maybe help us, find someone who love our initiative and got the knowledge to make it real.
We dont think only in a smarthphone-based app, also we want a webpage that could help more and more people.
Again, thanks for your comment, please stay tuned for our updates !

What a fabulous idea! Every immigrant can relate to this and I feel so deeply for this idea because I call my grandma on Hangouts every other week so I can learn how to recreate her best recipes. Your app will keep all grandma's traditions and our heritage alive across generations and will have a digital footprint that will stay forever! Thank you!! And you may also add an additional feature if relevant in the cultural/traditional context and that would be grandma's home remedies for health related ailments (I am sure every culture has its own traditional recipes for that). The Indian culture has so many remedies based on Ayurveda and homeopathy..

Thanks Archana, we really appreciate your comment.

Photo of Sebastián González
Team

Hi Maria and Team, I love this idea. I think it does a great job in incorporating culture and tradition. I find the advice section to be very unique and something I haven't seen before. I also love that the app leverages the significant influence of social media.

One area that I would love to hear more about is how your team envisioned the connection between the app and helping individuals live healthier lives. While I certainly think there are so many benefits that can come from this app, I would love to know more about the health-related connections. Overall, I think this is a great idea and look forward to learning more about it!

According to your question WiseGranny needs to collect the first data with the hashtag #wisegrannysays + (#advices, #recipies, #activities), in the first step of the app, we need to recruit real people and information (real grannies sharing their stories), at the moment we can have it, we plan to have a filtering system that converge the user profiles (needs, choices, wishes etc.) vs grannies stories, therefore the connection it becomes clear when a user receive advices, activities or recipes according to their issues or elections.

Also Jodalys, we want to bring back the "oldtime´s lifestyle" A slow, organic, concious lifestyle. Most of the latin grandparents were countrymen, or sons of them, so they have a clearer connection with a country lifestyle. We think that theres so much to learn about it, that can help us, much younger and urban people, to have healthier lifes trought little tips.
Thanks for the comments Joladys!

Congrats on coming up with a great idea! I especially like how you've thought through the benefits in using the app for the "grannies" and their grandchildren who may help them upload advice--preserving a legacy is a powerful motivator.

I understand the connection between bringing back more traditional lifestyles and health. Have you thought about if it would be important to include tips for the end user to modernize some of these traditions and realistically fit them into a modern lifestyle? i.e. maybe Granny recommends gardening for a few hours to get some activity, but in today's world with no space or time to garden, walking to the store instead of driving and buying some vegetables there would be a modern interpretation of Granny's tip.

Good luck!

We love your comment Tracy.
Is a fact that we didn´t live in a word as simple like our grannies one, so it´s quite relevant your idea. We think that "translate" all the advices it´s a huge job, but we can make that with the help of the user, they can comment their own interpretations and share it with the WiseGranny community.
Thanks again for the feedback !

Hi Maria and the Bogota Meetup! With a strong focus on technology and culture, we’re excited to move this idea into Refinement. We love seeing the prototyping efforts you already have under way and encourage you to build upon them throughout refinement. Have you gotten visuals of your platform in front of end users yet? Other are always able to provide invaluable insights. If you haven’t already, try one of the free app building sites out there to help better understand the user experience. We think you’re on to something here, especially because your idea ties into so many other community members’ ideas. Start up conversations with Healthy Village [http://ideo.pn/1JMi6ta], Healthy Traditional Food Network [http://ideo.pn/1LQ5K9p], Community Motivator [http://ideo.pn/1S9mBYr] or a wearable monitor [http://ideo.pn/1MJ6B8N] if you haven’t. We can’t wait to see your collaboration and idea get to the next level during refinement.

nice idea, Team&Maria.
i had more or less similar idea sharing here: https://openideo.com/challenge/healthy-lives/ideas/old-stories

you may like using grandma's & grandpa's directly rather than using their grandchildren. it'd be much easier and maybe much trustworthy since you'll have the original story.

the idea is to record their voice, at least in your beginning (talking is much easier than writing). to do so, you may need an studio (perhaps you can collaborate some of the audio-book studios for this).

then you may need access to lots of grandma's and grandpa's which is easy thanks to the old people's home.

This will be a two sided benefit: old people enjoy the sharing directly and young people use the result.
this way you can also have some gamification for the old people which will make more joy for them! ... .

p.s.: on the "old story" idea i'm alone and not sure if i'll be able to make it happen. it'd be great if one can merge the two idea's and create something better (of course if you guys also think the merged form can be better?).

Thanks for the idea contribution Maria! Perhaps you might consider translating this post into English so the goodness of your idea will be more accessible to the greater OpenIDEO community?

Shane, I tried to translate the idea:
This is a digital interface (app and webpage) divided in three categories that promote a healthy life. This categories or dimensions are; physical, mental and emotional. In each of this categories you will find advices and tips from latin grandmas focus on the profile of each user. People could upload information about traditional knowledge of remedies, recipes and activities from many grandmas of all latinoamerica.
This idea also allows to apply emphatic concepts from Human Centered Design approach, based on a healthy lifestyle and the needs of the people including the physical, mental and emotional. This is a different idea based on collaborative economies that allows learn, share and apply know without losing the tradition.

Thanks for your advice.

Thanks for the updates team! Loving where this idea is going. This is a great build on the potential of preserving and sharing healthy traditions that we had identified during the Research Phase. As you continue to develop this idea, we'd love for you to get more specific about what the end to end user journey might look and feel like. Perhaps you can explain the goodness of this idea in a human-centered way with these two tools:

User Scenario: http://www.openideo.com/open/e-waste/concepting/neighbourhood-e-waste-champion/

Hi Maria,

Nice your idea to approach grandma knowledge. Maybe this other idea can help on some insights and discussions: https://openideo.com/challenge/healthy-lives/ideas/food-culture-health-culture

To inspire regarding mental health, maybe the contents of the company Minvalley Hispano can inspire: http://www.mindvalleyhispano.com/

i absolutely love this idea! I typically, remember my grandmas' suggestions but never thought of turning into a tool that is accessible to all. Since, I value Ayurveda, home remedies for common ailments I have brought a couple of Indian books that give this knowledge as well!
good going Maria!

Grandma's legacy that endures for generations

Great idea Maria! Is it an app for people who are interested in sharing their grandma's recipes or for grandmas who loves sharing? How might we make this app (and website) accessible to grandmas?

Photo of Maria Paula Machado
Team

Hi Alper, Thanks for your comment.

We thought that the app is for people who are interested to be the medium between grandma and her recipes (Media: grandchildren), turn that knowledge in legacy of all the grandmas who believe in healthy lives. However (as designers and interdisciplinary team) we are considering create an app accessible to grandmas who loves sharing, we also want create a bond between grandma and grandchildren in the process. (Inspire and engage young people to support and learn from their grannies).

What do you think?
