Who is the target audience for your idea and how does it inspire the end user to lead a healthier life?

The target audience is people everywhere who have great food knowledge. Let's encourage them to share their ideas for healthy food while tapping into culture and traditions. We need to involve young people and encourage them to collaborate with senior members of the community to capture their unique food ideas. The social networking aspect provides a platform for sharing healthy food recipes and other knowledge including the cultivation of plants and food preservation.

Would a network of people sharing their food ideas help to preserve other important aspects of their culture? Might they be encouraged to meet up and cook together? Including the younger members of the family is important as well. How might we encourage people in the community to pass on their knowledge and experience to the next generation? How might the younger members help? Possibly by acting as collectors and curators of knowledge, learning about healthy eating and providing the technical understanding to upload and share the ideas.

A central platform that uses apps and social networking would let people connect with each other to create and share healthier versions of traditional dishes. This could include collaborating on making a dish healthier or combining dishes to make new healthier versions.

The social networking aspect would encourage people to talk and share other aspects of their lives as well as their great food ideas.

There is also potential for linking to other areas of healthy eating such as cultivating plants and preserving what you have cooked or grown. Sharing growing tips and food preservation ideas would help towards a more integrated approach to healthy eating.

How might this be achieved?

An app would be a starting point providing a central platform for uploading new recipes and sharing growing and preservation tips. Would an App be available to all users or is there another way of sharing the information?

I can see the need for content that could be transferred between lots of different platforms. This would be a challenge to manage. At the end of the day it’s the sharing of healthy food ideas, recipes and food culture that would be at the heart of the network.

The interface needs to be easy to use and interact with so that people are encouraged to use it rather than worry about how it works. How might this be achieved?

What early, lightweight experiment can you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

The heart of the Healthy Traditional Food Network is an easy to use interface that can be rolled out across a number of different platforms. It could work as an app or have web access. It could also function as a text only application that connects simpler devices.

What skills, input or guidance are you keen to connect with from the OpenIDEO community to help you build out or refine your idea?

I'd like some help with the technical aspects of setting up an online platform that can be accessed by people using smartphones, feature phones and more basic devices that can handle text messaging. Also let's think about content and how we begin to collect all the fantastic traditional healthy food ideas that people have.

Great seeing you in the challenge, Ian! Love your idea. What if there was an education element that families could use to teach their kids (and themselves!) about other cultures? Or a TV content tie-in so the kids would get references to what they're watching? Excited to see your idea evolve!
