What challenges or opportunities are you trying to address within the problem? (200 characters or less)

My biggest challenge is being willing to go to the gym and lift weights. Booooorrrrrring! With OsteoStrong, it's just 15 minutes a week. It's fun, private sessions with a trainer & built-in tracking.

OsteoStrong is not my idea, but I'm a customer of theirs. It gives me hope that I won't end up like my mom. I already have mild Osteopenia, and she's got severe Osteoporosis. The only exercise I love doing is cycling, especially mountain biking. Which does nothing to strengthen my bones! When I heard about OsteoStrong I thought it must be too good to be true. But it seemed they had enough scientific data to prove it works, and it's not too expensive, so if it doesn't work, I'm not out too much money. That was an important point.

I have started OsteoStrong twice before this round, first because I moved to San Mateo and didn't want to go all the way to Danville to do it. So I got tired of waiting, and dove in. Then about a month later, I tripped and fell, breaking a bone in my hand. So I had to take a couple months off. I'm back in it again, and have faith that this will help me keep my bones strong enough to handle the falls I take as a cyclist. I've broken a LOT of bones.

Who is your target end user and why will they be interested? (650 characters or less)

As a customer of OsteoStrong, I think more cyclists and women over 40 who are prone to Osteoporosis should consider this! I am a skeptical person, so the fact that they use a reputable (GE) bone density scanner on your first day to get your baseline is very important. It's also great because it claims to increase bone density 7% (over 1 year), whereas traditional strength training only gives you 1.5% improvement. I hate having to fight for time on the weights at the gym, so this promises the results I need without the drama and testosterone of a weightroom.

How is your idea scaleable? (650 characters or less)

OsteoStrong has been growing over the years, and I think more people will try it when they see customer testimonials, real "before and after" proof. It's too bad US insurance companies don't care about prevention, because this could save them a ton of money in Orthopedic Surgery!

What do/will you measure to know if your solution worked? (500 characters or less)

Before and after bone density tests on a reputable, functioning dx scanner are the most valuable proof. The fact that OsteoStrong shows you your progress on the screen WHILE YOU ARE using it is vital! It's so helpful to see my previous best and try to beat it. I don't get that on gym equipment, even with a pricey personal trainer.

What is the current stage of development of your idea?

  • Early Adoption: We have completed a pilot and analyzed the impact of that pilot on the intended users of the idea. I have proof of user uptake (i.e. 16% to 49% of the target population or 1,000 to 50,000 users).

If you were to become a Top Idea, would you want to actively participate in piloting your idea?

  • It's not my idea, so it's not for me to say. I'd just love to see more proof of how well it works.

Hi Susanna Schick
Thank you for your participation in the Ideas Phase of the Healthy Bones Challenge.
I see that there are details you should add about the solution. Please make sure the idea is your original submission.
Can you be sure to have OsteoStrong submit their concept? We haven't seen it yet on the platform and can't evaluate it if it doesn't come from them.

The DEADLINE for idea submission is Wednesday July 3rd, 2019 5pm PST.

A CHECKLIST to guide you.
Please make sure your idea does the following:
1) Clearly define the problem
2) Connects to at least one opportunity area
3) States how & when user accesses the solution
4) Tells the story

Let me know if you need anything.
