Memento

Make gratitude tangible by giving a piece of thankfulness and creating a team bonding exercise and physical memento in the process!

Expressions and experiences of gratitude include a piece of a puzzle, lego sculpture, 3d printed design, etc. which will eventually create a tangible manifestation and reminder of our gratitude.

Pieces are distributed to employees with additional stations setup across the worksite (beside cubicles, in meeting rooms, lunchrooms, etc.) to be given away and accompany expressions and experiences of gratitude. Once all the pieces have been given away as part of gratitude acts the team, group, pillar, department, or organization (depending on the size of the company) come together to build the Memento and recall the things they for which they were grateful.

Memento stays on display as a positive reminder and manifestation of the gratitude of the organization for its employees while pieces for a new memento are distributed. The Memento remains only until a new memento is ready to be built.

Idea Title

Memento - tangible gratitude, beautiful reminder.

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

It makes gratitude tangible, transparent, and serves as a reminder that we have much to be grateful for and should continue to be grateful. Memento inspires a positive self fulfilling cycle of expressions and experiences of gratitude.

Who are you innovating for?

I am innovating for individuals, groups, organizations, communities, and the world as wildly farfetched and optimistic as that seems.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

All - due to the simplistic nature of this concept, I think it is nearly universally applicable and could be deployed globally with minimal to no overhead costs to the organization.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

1. Leadership support 2. Leadership communicates to Mgmt 3. Mgmt support 4. Rollout by Leadership/HR 5. Change Champions, with feedback loop

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

Depending on organization size the actual build of the Memento could be resource intensive (100s of employees banding together to build 10,000+ piece sculpture). This could be mitigated by constructing the design in parallel and leaving a piece per employee to put on the finished design. Each employee would then come up to recant the things they were grateful for and add their one piece to the Memento. Alternatively Mementos could be localized to smaller groups (i.e. team, pillar, dept, etc.).

How will you test and prototype your solution?

Begin with volunteer organizations and execute proof of concept trials with puzzles and legos which are readily available and not cost prohibitive. Survey organizations to see if Mementos in fact achieve the goal of inspiring expressions and experiences of gratitude.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

1. Partner with GGSC & IDEO - See if we cant design and produce the Memento's in-house through 3d printing and internal design resourcing. Partner to produce a simplified playbook of ways to express and experience gratitude. 2. Produce Memento's (R&D) - If we are able to achieve using in-house designs/resources then the grant would go toward achieving this.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Prototyping: You have conducted some small tests or experiments with prospective users and will continue developing idea through these tests.
  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

Reflection and questions. I began by writing out all my questions about the challenge. I found that as I explored the topic, that the consciousness alone elevated my personal feelings of gratitude. The idea was born from that insight - I wanted a simple way to raise consciousness and make gratitude transparent and tangible. Memento was a ritual/habit idea that captured that spirit with minimal costs or complexities.

Tell us about your experience

I've worked in HR for 5 years and have experience across the entire HR lifecycle; I most recently helped to scale an organization 3x and build out the HR function. My interest in HR grew out of team dynamics and organizational behavior as experienced through athletics, an interest which was furthered by an education in Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.
