How does it work?

Do Something: You do an activity designed by your organization to develop a certain skill. Your impact score increases when you register a completed activity. 

Be grateful: You get gratitude points for any activity you do which you can give to the people you want to thank. When a person gives you gratitude points, your echo (indirect impact) increases. 

Track your footprint: Your impact and your echo make up your footprint (Your overall effect on the world). As a result you have a broad image of how you affect the world around you.

GREATFULL: Be grateful. Be great-full.

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

GreatFull is a technology that encourages people within an organization to express gratitude towards their co-workers. Every expression of gratitude is a transaction that our algorithm takes into account to measure its impact on the world –or a given environment–. To express gratefulness, users need “gratitude points” which they earn by doing activities their company designs to transform their work environment and achieve organizational goals.

Who are you innovating for?

Organizations: With our technology organizations have a tool to transform their culture by using gratitude to change the way their employees interact. People: We give people within an organization a new way to express gratitude. Our innovation is that gratitude becomes a currency of impact. Leaders: We create a new way of impact measurement. Our technology is able to track the indirect impact (the impact people who thanked you has on the world) people have. Think of it as a ripple.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

Even though our technology can work in any organization, GreatFull is designed for companies with more than 100 employees where the type of information we provide (leaders, narrative analysis, among others) becomes relevant. Employees must have access to smartphones to download our app. It can be used in any geography of any industry.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

To make GreatFull work, we need the commitment of the leaders within the organization to promote gratitude among their employees. It’s desirable that the company already understands its core values or how they want their culture to be transformed. Having the Human Resources team engaged is key for a successful implementation. They must create quests of activities that build the wanted culture and promote GreatFull among the employees as a new way to express gratitude.

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

It will be a challenge for employees to use the app. We believe that leaders of the organization must do an effort to promote gratitude. We also think that our new way to measure impact will be an incentive to use our technology.

How will you test and prototype your solution?

We already created a prototype and tested it within some organizations in Colombia. From the lessons learned, we launched the first version of the app a few weeks ago. It is now available on the AppStore and Google Play.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

With the help of the mentors, we will test our technology within US organizations to understand if our premises are truly global. Then, we will improve our technology to be sure that it responds to the needs of the companies. Finally, we will promote it and face the implementation challenges.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

We created BAKONGO PEACE a camp that brought young victims of Colombian war and former soldiers from illegally armed groups to help them overcome their pasts and reconcile. Together, they created a camp for kids in poverty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgm3uDvwv4g After the first camp we tried to raise more funds and we couldn't because we didn't have a tool to measure impact. From that frustration we decided to make technology to measure social footprint and solve this kind of problems.

Tell us about your experience

I'm the founder of the Colombian Network of Youth “RECOJO” the first network of young social entrepreneurs in Colombia. Along with my corporation, I created a leadership camp call BAKONGO and YLEGACY a training program for young social entrepreneurs. I also created a crowdfunding platform, a teambuilding company and a legal firm. I`m Ashoka Fellow, Global Shaper from the World Economic Forum and International Speaker. Please describe, in detail, how you will test and get feedback on your concept.

For our test, we selected the legal firm Godoy Cordoba. First we sent 20 emails – like the ones shown above– with a link to a gratitude form. The idea was to encourage people to thank someone at their workplace. At the second stage we sent another 20 emails but this time we included the partners of the firm . We wanted to undestarnd if the leadership team of the company play an important rol to create "gratitude chains". To analyze the results, we gathered three different data: Number of gratitude messages sent; How many times each employee sent gratitude messages and machine learning analysis of the most common words in the messages to have a better understanding of what people were grateful for. Please describe specifically how you plan to scale your idea. What are the key next steps you will take, and how will those steps inform the evolution and growth of your concept?

We plan on taking three key steps during our escalation phase: Implementation, promotion and improvement. First, after having adjusted our pilot technology, we will take GreatFull to a group of businesses to implement it, seeking to be a suitable tool to help transform the culture of organizations and a sustainable way of boosting gratitude at the workplace. Once we have a success story in one or more organizations, we will take that information and build a strong message to communicate through various promotion tactics. The objective is to sell our technology to make sustainable our desire of promoting gratitude. We will join stakeholders related to workplace wellness and generate alliances with them to reach new markets; we will build a network through social media and press to position GreatFull as a relevant source of information on the subject, for example, through a published list of Top GreatFull Companies. After we’ve had sufficient interaction with clients and feedback, we will begin our improvement stage. In it, we will gather the information and reports we get from experience to fine-tune our technology and find new ways to fulfill our clients needs. Here, we will go after new innovative ideas to enhance the experience users and businesses get. For instance, offering pre-designed quest’s packages for the most common values pursued by companies; or connecting with different social media –like LinkedIn and Facebook– through badges and gamification.

As we have seen in the Challenge, there is a tension between authentic expressions of gratitude and mandatory gratitude. How does your idea inspire truly authentic expressions of gratitude versus mandated ones?

As the results of our prototype show, while GreatFull encourages gratitude, its expression is not linked to performance. This means, that you can thank someone for anything you want, regardless if it’s related or not to work. The outcome being that most of the gratitude messages analyzed through machine learning were authentic articulations of friendship and solidarity where words like life or friend stood out. We only lit the spark by pushing the first domino and creating a space for gratitude.

Gratitude often thrives when opportunities for connection are created. How will your concept create new opportunities for human connection?

Though GreatFull is an idea harnessed in technology, a big part of its concept is built around the purpose of translating the online dynamics into offline actions. Our quests and activities live in the offline world, creating opportunities for new interactions. For example, to earn gratitude points you will have to choose between a different set of challenges such as carpooling with co-workers or leaving a friendly note on someone’s desk.

Who (specifically) will benefit from your concept, and how they will interact with it? What design considerations have you included to ensure easy and intuitive interactions? 

First, employees will benefit by feeling appreciated at their workplace, actively building a better work environment, interacting with different people at the organization, enhancing their communication with their leaders and boosting gratitude in their lives by making it a habit. Also, HR Managers and CEOs will gain a new source of information. With the help of our technology they will be able to turn soft data into hard data to learn more about their teams, identify leaders and make better decisions. Furthermore, as Greater Good Science Center Studies show creating a grateful culture will positively impact profitability and productivity. Finally, we’ve worked on building a simple platform with a user-friendly language and a nice minimalist design to make its usability as easy as possible. This means, that we’ve eliminated all the excess features. Additionally, we built the platform to be used through the most common communication channels at the workplace: email, app and web.

Please describe how you intend to use the prize funding, if selected as a Top Idea. Be specific.

We plan on doing two crucial things: First, we would use it to refine the GreatFull platform and go into implementation phase. In it, we would not only make the most of the funding received, but also work along with the sponsors to strengthen our technology and carry out an effective performance. Secondly, we would recruit a team that would manage the promotion campaign both from a communications’ and a sales’ perspective.
