Public access to team members' Love Languages results(Gary Chapman) on intranet/webpage; teams initiate brainstorm around giving activities.

Upon onboarding, team member takes the 5 languages of Love quiz by Gary Chapman. The results rank of verbal affirmation, act of service, quality time, and gifts(excl. touch) will show up in company’s intranet profile page, or on a separate virtual profile page accessible to everyone in the firm.

Based on the understanding of team/individual’s love language, here are some examples of actions to employ as a starting point. However, teams are encouraged to come up with their own practices:

WORDS OF AFFIRMATION            

  • Acknowledgement on a platform for teams (i.e. Yammer) with focus on the growth of employee (ex: you did well on x, I see a huge improvement on y, and this contributed to the company in y way. Teams can decide to opt in/out, as well as the frequency as they see appropriate for their team structure/operations.
  • Prior to team meetings, the team come up with one overarching gratitude or discuss what is top of mind in perspective changing topics.
  • Say Grateful’s (3 things you are grateful for) before eating, can say to self if alone, or share with someone near you if eating in a group. 


ACT OF SERVICE

  • Partner with companies like Envest to allow employees time to volunteer with their skillsets to 1.attribute meaningfully to others, 2. grow skillsets, 3. gain perspective; this will circulate act of service to others in the system
  • Invest in a pioneering group of gratitude network; train them in positive behavior; within network find people who exhibit gratitude behavior for training and spreading


QUALITY TIME   

  • One on one coaching sessions between managers/team members
  • Set up dyads for quality time discussions on personal sharing/stress release/etc.
  • Set up growth buddy in organization to keep each other accountable
  • Organized offsite trips between teams/leadership into nature to work through arduous tasks and get to know people on deeper level, gain perspective on coworkers as humans


GIFTS     

  • give time off when a group/team/person has achieved x, y, z, (ex: when a worker finished an assignment and generated 5x revenue, give the option to take Friday afternoon off to rest)
  • quarterly celebrating of corpsgiving- an offshoot of thanksgiving; sharing of food, discussions on gratitude, feeling connected with fellow coworkers

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

Bringing attention to people's love languages creates a space to 1) bring attention that it is important to show people in the workplace love/care, and 2) highlight differences in which people communicate love and care. It opens doors for conversations around how to show each other care and concern as well as gives opportunities for people to come up with their own variations of ways to show others love in the ecosystem, without being mandated or obliged.

Who are you innovating for?

Individuals will benefit as with better self understanding of meeting needs(both in and outside of work. It also triggers people to start thinking in "what is their love language" frame of mind, inducing more giving. Teams can form bonding activities in figuring out how to best create practices and rituals most fitting for varying types of needs, which creates more buy-in.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

This applies to global English speaking workforce, all industries and sized companies where all/most team members have access to company intranet/web portal.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

1. Speak to HR head at my firm and intranet engineering team. 2. Widely roll out quiz to all employees, then pipette information onto intranet for all access. 3. Set a deadline for teams to group discuss their results with most frequently contacted co-workers, and brain storm for ways to practice ways to "connect" with each other.

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

1. Some people may not be comfortable with their love language information shared on the public platform. -- I think this can be overcomed if the CEO of the firm starts the train, then senior leadership, then the employees will follow. It can be an opt-in process. 2. Team gathering time to get together to come up with and implement ideas. Need management buy-in to spend business hours on tasks, could make it easier if create a list of activities as sample templates as listed above.

How will you test and prototype your solution?

Start with my team of 10 people in my organization to get buy in. Have everyone take the quiz and share results, discuss plan for execution.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

I'd take the grant to implement software change in my own company so the quiz/results can inspire more positive love language talk in corporations, as well as trigger more positive behaviors as more positive conversations have been introduced.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

The idea of introducing gratitude led to associations with love expression. Looking for a simple exercise that could create conversation as well give more awareness. Thoughts translate to words, then to behavior. So based on existing Gary Chapman's frameworks of love languages, we thought about how do we introduce technology and social media into spreading awareness.

Abby Wen Wu work in human capital process design at Grant Thornton, an advisory firm. Stephanie Harrison Bailey worked as a designer at SoulCycle, currently transitioning to changing the world. Kim Li works as a Designer at Shine, a well-being focused startup.

Abby has worked in academic research for organizational behavior, HR, and HR consulting. Kim and Stephanie have both worked in design, graphic as well as physical space, respectively.
