Accept and encourage for peace and harmony in the workplace

Workplace is stressful.From workload,personal issues,different cultural backgrounds everything adds to the stress. So to make the workplace easy and harmonious the most important aspect is to be aware and accept the situation. Realizing one's own strengths and accepting one's own weakness is the foremost step to create a healthy environment at a workplace. The whole world runs on balance so it is very important to understand that there needs to be balance at the workplace as well.

I put forward very simple example of this.

A is superior and at a powerful position than B.But A needs to understand that he/she cannot complete a task alone without B.And B should also understand or made aware of his/her importance and contribution in completing a task.Even a prime minister needs delegates for governance.A CEO also needs an effective management for smooth functioning of an organization.

Similarly a janitor or a house keeper has an importance in the workplace and t is important for the organization to appreciate their efforts in keeping the office place neat and tidy.

For such an environment a leader should take charge and lead by setting an example. Pareto principle says that one needs to put 20% of the efforts to get the 80% of the tasks done.So a leader must take charge and put that 20% effort.

Everyone looks upon their leader and gets inspired by them.So it is the responsibility of the leader to set an example in everyway.

Another example would be a conversation with a person of different culture /language. The translator would do the job.So it is the job of the leader to thank them to make them realize their importance to the organization.Now if there is no translator,the leader himself should set example by creating a linguistic team headed by him/her and putting those 20% of the effort to learn the language.

At the same time leader needs to be very cautious of his actions.He/she should lead,put efforts without overburdening himself/herself and without compromising his/her position.

In an ideal situation the action of leader should create little fear in an employee that his/her job is being taken which would encourage him/her to complete his/her tasks more efficiently.Now here a leader should show his soft side and appreciate him/her or thank him/her.

MASLOW's hierarchy-Also employees in workplace must be taken care of in terms of MASLOW's hierarchy of needs.Apart from physiological needs every other needs can be taken care of at the workplace by simple token of gratitude.

Special Window-Everyone want to feel special and everyone wants to contribute something in this world.So a special window should be created at the workplace where everyone gets the opportunity to showcase his/her skills apart from the work.Again thins to be considered in such activities are that people should not combine such activities and work.For example an employee somewhat mediocre at work may be a good motivator who can relax the mood in such a window.

Communication and freedom of expression-It very important for organizations to give space for communications,asking everyone's opinions about issues as well as giving opportunity to express themselves. In case of conflicts negotiation should be triggered in present of counselor which can balance things out.There are instances where a person is not able to express himself/herself which creates anger inside him/her. In presence of counselor he/she should be given an opportunity to express himslef/herself.

Holistic environment through yoga and mindfulness- A holistic work environment can be created simple by a small 15-20 minute session of mindfulness and encouraging yoga at the workplace.The more flexible one becomes the peace he/she develops and more gratitude he/she can express.

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

The idea is a bottom up approach that requires leader to be aggressive and lead by example.Hence it is very important for an leader to be mature and aware of his/her actions.With the approach mentioned and effective leadership the idea would create a rippling effect starting from a leader to the employee at lowermost level. With daily practice of gratitude and actions inspired by leader the organisation can transform itself from stressful one to a peaceful one and expression of gratitude would find itself and make the people more productive.

Who are you innovating for?

People working in a profit oriented firms where things are quite stressful as well as people at bureaucratic work environments where there is lots of conflicts.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

Private organizations that re well funded and small in size.Generally public organizations feed their employees very well so i am neglecting them,but private organizations where competition is high and people are stressed and it is difficult to maintain work life balance would benefit from such practices.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

Idea should be implemented at senior management level who would set the tone and serve as flag bearers of community practicing gratitude.A simple workshop to include everyone led by top management is an ideal way to introduce such programs. Many firms providing holistic services such as yoga course,meditation workshops to be approached for implementation.Also authority to be given to such firms to implement their programs with firm dedication .

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

People themselves are obstacles for such an implementation.We live in a fast paced world .Everyone wants instant gratification.After long hours of stressful work,people would like to go out for a beer rather than attending a 30 minute meditation workshop or going for 30 minute run in the park. However the humanity is the solution for problems also.We are striving to land on mars so definitely motivating people can be overcome.

How will you test and prototype your solution?

-Testing and prototyping of solution is to be done by organizing workshops during events such as International Yoga Day on 21st June. -Annual meetings of an organization to be started with a 5 minute silence and meditation. -field trips to nature and make people realize that they are humans and not workhorse.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

I will create a small team consisting of yoga teachers,meditation practitioners,counselors and psychotherapists arrange workshops at my previous workplaces and universities as well as local communities.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

My idea emerged while I was working at a multinational organization back in India.I observed a lot and figured that very few people are truly motivated to work in an organisation.Rest all are agitated,stressed and there presence is more of an obligatory one rather that enthusiastic one. That is when I realized what is the common thing that can connect everyone and make them appreciate the work done by others.I started practicing myself by thanking personnel at every level whenever I could.

I am Rishank ,a 28 year old student who has been grateful to receive good education and had privilege to work at various multinational organizations for many years both as a joining level employee and being a member of a close knit team.

I am a Mechanical Engineer and a Management graduate with specialization in marketing.Currently I am studying Masters in Space Studies at International Space University,Strasbourg France.I have worked as an engineer for a multinational firm for many years and then switched to consulting role and worked for another company in a consulting role.
