Workplace is stressful.From workload,personal issues,different cultural backgrounds everything adds to the stress. So to make the workplace easy and harmonious the most important aspect is to be aware and accept the situation. Realizing one's own strengths and accepting one's own weakness is the foremost step to create a healthy environment at a workplace. The whole world runs on balance so it is very important to understand that there needs to be balance at the workplace as well.
I put forward very simple example of this.
A is superior and at a powerful position than B.But A needs to understand that he/she cannot complete a task alone without B.And B should also understand or made aware of his/her importance and contribution in completing a task.Even a prime minister needs delegates for governance.A CEO also needs an effective management for smooth functioning of an organization.
Similarly a janitor or a house keeper has an importance in the workplace and t is important for the organization to appreciate their efforts in keeping the office place neat and tidy.
For such an environment a leader should take charge and lead by setting an example. Pareto principle says that one needs to put 20% of the efforts to get the 80% of the tasks done.So a leader must take charge and put that 20% effort.
Everyone looks upon their leader and gets inspired by them.So it is the responsibility of the leader to set an example in everyway.
Another example would be a conversation with a person of different culture /language. The translator would do the job.So it is the job of the leader to thank them to make them realize their importance to the organization.Now if there is no translator,the leader himself should set example by creating a linguistic team headed by him/her and putting those 20% of the effort to learn the language.
At the same time leader needs to be very cautious of his actions.He/she should lead,put efforts without overburdening himself/herself and without compromising his/her position.
In an ideal situation the action of leader should create little fear in an employee that his/her job is being taken which would encourage him/her to complete his/her tasks more efficiently.Now here a leader should show his soft side and appreciate him/her or thank him/her.
MASLOW's hierarchy-Also employees in workplace must be taken care of in terms of MASLOW's hierarchy of needs.Apart from physiological needs every other needs can be taken care of at the workplace by simple token of gratitude.
Special Window-Everyone want to feel special and everyone wants to contribute something in this world.So a special window should be created at the workplace where everyone gets the opportunity to showcase his/her skills apart from the work.Again thins to be considered in such activities are that people should not combine such activities and work.For example an employee somewhat mediocre at work may be a good motivator who can relax the mood in such a window.
Communication and freedom of expression-It very important for organizations to give space for communications,asking everyone's opinions about issues as well as giving opportunity to express themselves. In case of conflicts negotiation should be triggered in present of counselor which can balance things out.There are instances where a person is not able to express himself/herself which creates anger inside him/her. In presence of counselor he/she should be given an opportunity to express himslef/herself.
Holistic environment through yoga and mindfulness- A holistic work environment can be created simple by a small 15-20 minute session of mindfulness and encouraging yoga at the workplace.The more flexible one becomes the peace he/she develops and more gratitude he/she can express.
