30 days of Gratitude Challenge

Employees will be challenged to express gratitude at least once per day for 30 days.

Each staff member will be given a calendar with a specific person and/or activity of gratitude listed on each day of the month. The challenge is to complete all 30 days of gratitude activities. At the end of the 30 days, a short assessment will be given to participants asking them to reflect on the past 30 days and how expressing gratitude affected them and their workplace environment. All who complete the challenge will be entered into prize drawings for things such as massage, yoga class, and lunch catered in with co-workers.

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

This idea will inspire employees to express gratitude by giving them daily ideas on how to do so. Upon completing the 30 day challenge, the hope is the employees will realize the positive impact gratitude brought to them both personally and in their workplace environment. If we can do something for 30 days straight and see the benefit it will inspire us to continue on a regular basis.

Who are you innovating for?

All staff members of an organization can benefit from this challenge by opening themselves up to expressing gratitude in the workplace and by their peers doing the same. It will create an atmosphere that is accepting of gratitude expressions and will improve the relationships among staff members. They will also benefit personally by their internal expressions of gratitude for a happy healthier overall wellbeing.

This challenge would be ideal for any size of organization

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

Our wellness ambassadors would be the front line for implementing this idea among our 10 schools. They would be responsible for distributing the calendars and promoting the challenge. We would also promote it organization-wide with an all staff e-mail and supervisor announcements.

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

One obstacle could be getting employees to participate. We would try to overcome this with a strong marketing timeline throughout the 30 days and promoting the prize drawings that will be available at the end of the challenge (incentives to participants). Some people might not see the benefit in expressing gratitude and could be reluctant to participate, however, we believe that peer engagement will create a ripple effect.

How will you test and prototype your solution?

We will roll this out at each of our buildings and develop a post-challenge assessment to gather feedback after the 30 day challenge.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

Creating the 30 day calendar (some ideas have already been brainstormed), marketing to staff, securing prizes for post-challenge drawings.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

We had done a "kindness challenge" in the past which involved a calendar and random acts of kindness ideas on each day. This idea emerged from that foundation and was shaped to meet the expression of gratitude need. It was shared during our brainstorm session with our district wellness committee.
