Give drivers the opportunity to tap into a deeper sense of purpose by connecting them with riders in need such as the elderly or disabled.  Rides could be sponsored either by corporations, ie "This Hero Ride Sponsored by Ford," or crowdfunded by bonus tips of riders in the system.  Ie "Fund a Hero Ride for $1).  Donations could be matched by the ride sharing company or a corporate sponsor.

Idea Title

Hero Rides

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

People feel a deeper sense of gratitude when they are connected to a deeper sense of meaning in their job. It would also connect drivers to the community they are driving in. This would provide drivers with an opportunity to do meaningful community service without sacrificing their paycheck.

Who are you innovating for?

The entire ecosystem can benefit by creating a gratitude loop between the local community and drivers. Drivers benefit from feeling a deeper sense of meaning in their job. Riders in need benefit from free rides. The corporate sponsors benefit from associating their brand with something positive, and the ride sharing company benefits from increased exposure and positive press.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

Ride sharing companies.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

A limited sponsored test run could prove efficacy.

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

Deciding how to choose who gets a free ride could be an obstacle. For example, would it be based on individual criteria for each person? Or perhaps based on rides to/from certain locations, for example anyone driving to hospitals or clinics?

How will you test and prototype your solution?

The ride sharing app could be modified for a limited test run.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

We would start by pitching the idea to corporations who might be likely to sponsor a test. For example, Kaiser might fund rides to their hospital. We would then pitch the concept with a sponsor attached to ride sharing companies Uber and Lyft.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

This idea was based partially on interviews with drivers which showed how having a deeper sense of meaning leads to deeper gratitude. It was also inspired by having family members who need regular rides to hospitals and clinics. Sometimes just getting to the hospital is a barrier to treatment, and this is something that could help. We refined the idea at a San Francisco OpenIDEO chapter meeting.
