"Gratitude Interlude" is a special day every month where employees of varying roles come together to express their gratitude towards each other. Each event will be hosted by a different corporate function (i.e. Finance, IT, Sales) with content varying from deck parties to dinners to team-building activities (i.e. escape rooms). The one constant at the event will be the theme of gratitude.

Idea Title

Gratitude Interlude

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

This idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization by formalizing a time and place for expressing gratitude in a relaxed setting.

Who are you innovating for?

I am innovating for every employee who feels that a sense of gratitude is lacking in their workplace. These individuals will benefit because, first and foremost, they will likely appreciate the time and effort their supervisors and co-workers put into planning and executing a customized event for them.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

The specific type of workplace I am innovating is large, Fortune 500 companies with multiple functions and employees from all walks of life.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

I envision this idea being introduced to my selected organizations first through starting small and scaling as the idea gains traction. The ideal person to start the initiative would be a c-suite executive and a viable start would be similar to a monthly newsletter or live video of the c-suite expressing their gratitude to the employees who feel the most overlooked. Ideally, the newsletter or video will gain more participation over time. Once employees are accustomed to the idea of expressing gratitude every month, the c-suite can delegate the responsibility to the appropriate Human Capital team who would be able to dedicate time to execute the idea of event-hosting every month.

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

The biggest obstacle I foresee in implementing this idea is gaining participation. The backbone of this idea is participation amongst employees. I think the best way to overcome this is to first start at organizations that are in the most need of more gratitude in the workplace. Simply put, we overcome this obstacle by focusing on organizations who have the most demand for the idea.

How will you test and prototype your solution?

I will personally test and prototype this solution by introducing the idea into the student organizations of which I am a part of. I will start with a monthly video of me expressing my gratitude towards my co-workers and record my progress by the amount of participants I gain in a certain amount of time. I believe student organizations will be a good place to start as they are similar to the workplace setting.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

My immediate next steps if I receive an implementation grant will be to gather a team of like-minded individuals to help me plan and budget the idea to go large-scale. For example, reaching out to large corporations and creating social media campaigns. The mentoring organizations would be the perfect hot spot to recruit individuals interested in the idea and bring fresh insights into its implementation.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

My idea emerged from a series of surveys and focus groups that I conducted on varying demographics. From the gathered information, I found that the idea that would make the most impact had to start at the top of the organization and had to incorporate socializing. Because of this, I thought having a formalized holiday of sorts would bring the most value to large organizations.

My name is Kenny and I am a UT Austin senior student. I have a passion for teaching and am interested in learning anything from educational psychology to strategic information technology.

Where are you / your team located?

I am located in Austin, TX USA.

Tell us about your experience

Although I have no worked in the gratitude field before, I am interested in the subject. The more I research the topic, the more important I find it to be (inside and outside the workplace).

Hey Kenny Tran,

I think this is a great idea with a lot of potential. It would be great to have different departments to take lead and show gratitude to others. This is a good way to create transparency and networking throughout the organization. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Kenny Tran !
cool idea! I like how the party planning rotates monthly between different departments. In order to kick-off this initiative I think it might be helpful to first find a group of volunteers, regardless of their departments who are likely to function as multipliers. I could imagine that these sort of events could be a great occasion to eliminate silo structures and give people a chance to get to know each other better and thus, help build a stronger workplace culture. What do you think?
Thanks for connecting Lauren Ito :)

Hi Kenny Tran ,

Great to see you in the Ideas Phase of the Challenge! I'm curious about what would incentivize people to participate in this initiative? How would you measure the success of this initiative internally?

I'm also tagging a few other concepts that are focused on events. They may be helpful for you to exchange feedback with on your concept Thanksgiving at Work , Unplugged Gratitude Parties .

Excited to learn more!
