Gratigame: The Game Where the Most Grateful Win!

Gratigame teaches us the value of and skills associated with gratitude.

In an age of virtual communication, thank you is often a closing statement at the end of an email. In order to break out of the mundane culture of gratitude found in many workplaces, I propose we creatively bring back the fun and joy in gratitude.

From childhood to adulthood, games foster an atmosphere of fun and create a space to learn skills like resource management, negotiation, and critical thinking. The purpose of Gratigame is to foster the skills necessary to give and receive gratitude in the workplace in a fun and lighthearted way.

Below are the rules of Gratigame:

  1. Each department has 50 Graticards in different colors (i.e. Adult Medicine Graticards are blue)
  2. Graticards are cards with grateful statements that are meant to be given to staff that are doing work that you are grateful for
  3. Managers will house the Graticards and staff will ask for a Graticard and tell their Manager who they will give it to and why
  4. Once said staff gives the Graticard to the recipient from a different department, the recipient will give it to their Manager and tell them who gave it to them and why
  5. Only 25% of the Graticards can be given to a “sister department” (i.e. Adult Medicine and Pediatric Medicine)
  6. At the end of each quarter, the department that has given away the most Graticards is the winner
  7. The prize will be for the entire department and will be decided by Senior Leadership
  8. Managers will then return the Graticards to the respective Managers to start again for the next quarter

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

Gratigame will reduce the awkward feelings associated with giving and receiving gratitude because games have a way of breaking the ice and easing interactions. It will create the space for people to step out of their comfort zones to show gratitude to people they appreciate, but may not engage with on a daily basis. Furthermore, to help people articulate and express their gratitude, each Graticard will have a great quote about gratitude.

Who are you innovating for?

All staff of my community health center will benefit from Gratigame. There is about 300 staff that provide healthcare and community services in a high need neighborhood, therefore this game would encourage them to give and receive gratitude and increase overall morale.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

Gratigame is designed for the employees of my community health center in Boston, but can be introduced in all department-based work settings.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

I will introduce the idea to the Senior Leadership of the community health center. If approved, Gratigame will be marketed to all staff and then managers will received the Graticards to commence the game.

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

In order to ease its adoption among staff, I will present the idea to Senior Leadership who can then disseminate their approval to managers and staff at large. Managers only house the Graticards and should not do extra facilitation work. There is also concern that the gratitude expressed will not be authentic because it is done within the confides of a game. However, I believe Gratigame will encourage staff to step out of their comfort zones to find those they're grateful for and thank them.

How will you test and prototype your solution?

I would test the idea with two to three small departments. This will allow me to asses if the rules are clear, the gratitude quotes on the Graticards are applicable, and the process to give and receive Graticards is efficient.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

I will prototype Gratigame with two to three departments and use their feedback to refine the game and scale-up to all staff at the community health center.

Hi Bethel,
Gamification always brings the new energy to the staff members to achieve various goals and tasks at workplace. I feel this idea is great if everyone would be involved and take it as a tool to develop the culture of Gratitude at workplace.
