Experience the Beauty of Gratitude as Part of Work Culture

My contribution will entail growing/increasing genuine gratitude in the work place through fun competition and rewards.

The real problem about gratitude in the workplace that I want to solve is getting the majority to all the people of the work place to feel the want to give/receive genuine gratitude. My idea to grow gratitude as an essential part of workplace culture begins with having weekly appreciation gifts for the person or people who have shown the most gratitude that week. What I am thinking is that at an end of the week conference, all workers put into a box the name of the worker they think has shown the most gratitude that week and whoever wins gets a reward. Then on a wall most people walk by there will be a chart with all workers names and each week whoever gets the gratitude reward gets a check mark by their name so people can see who has been the most appreciative over time. I'm thinking this would be a good strategy to increase gratitude because most people unconsciously are stimulated by competition and an end reward.

How the Idea will inspire the experience and expression of gratitude within an organization.

My idea will inspire the growing experience and expression of gratitude by adding rewards to acting positively to others in the workplace. By making a fun competition between workers, there will be an increased amount of gratitude throughout the workplace, then making gratitude an essential part of workplace culture. Others will see there coworkers increasing the amount of gratitude they are giving out and that will rub off on everyone, then increasing the role of gratitude in the work place.

Who are you innovating for?

Everyone in the workplace that is using my idea. I am thinking smaller companies, or departments or units of bigger companies.

What type of workplaces are you innovating for?

It could be any type of organization, but I was thinking a smaller sized organization would benefit the most from my idea. But if someone from a larger organization is really passionate about increasing gratitude, I believe they could have an important part in making my idea become prominent in their workplace.

How you envision the Idea being introduced to your selected organization?

I envision this idea being presented at an end of the week meeting that the majority or all of the workers are at. I would like someone who is higher up in the organization to present this idea. The boss would be responsible for implementing this idea and the workers under the boss would obviously have an important part in implementing and making the idea become a big part of their workplace culture.

What obstacles, if any, do you foresee in implementing this Idea, and how would they be overcome?

For a really big organization, I think it would be hard to see the chart of who's been the most appreciative by just having a weekly vote, so maybe at the end of everyday or two days they could have the same idea but more often. Or if the boss isn't passionate about growing gratitude in the workplace it would have a negative trickle down affect on the workers, then making the idea of no importance.

How will you test and prototype your solution?

I would like smaller organization workplaces to have a 6 week trial of this plan, and to see if they see an increase in everyone's gratitude. Have a survey of what the workers think about themselves giving gratitude but also receiving more gratitude.

What immediate next steps will you take if you receive an implementation grant.

My immediate next steps would to make a more specific blueprint to present to organizations, how to appropriately implement this idea and give evidence to back up what this idea will help in the workplace and for work culture.

I am Tristan, I am with the University of Michigan. I am a Biopsychology Cognition Neuroscience major. I also am a student-athlete with the University of Michigan Men's Soccer Team. I am looking to make a positive impact in others lives and for people to see the full potential in their lives.
