College education has evolved beyond the traditional learning of books, computers, and the actual four walls.  Whereas college majors once produced educators, doctors, and lawyers, now students have the option for liberal studies, entrepreneurship, global studies and so on.  Instead of attending classes in a campus setting and meeting in person with professors, degree programs are offered entirely online allowing students to never visit a college campuses or interact with classmates beyond class discussion boards and/or group projects which are all done online.  Thus students are farther advance and in tune with the society than what traditional education provided.  Because of this, colleges must expose students to a curriculum which involves and addresses the needs of humanity.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

The Communiversity Approach bridges the community with the college in various programs and opportunities that permit learners to navigate their college experience while gaining awareness and skillsets that prepare them for the needs of tomorrow. Co-curricular activities seek to recruit, retain and engage learners while striving to provide a comfortable setting, introduce the familiarity of college life, and better prepare students to engage with the community.

This idea emerged from:

  • A group brainstorm

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

OpenIDEO would enhance this approach by providing support to the already existing programs. Providing learners with a holistic view of society beyond a linear approach focusing only on the traditional spectrum of education, these opportunities cater to the ever-evolving world of technology, arts, social justice, and entrepreneurship allowing students to expand outside of the classroom experience. Your support is needed is providing other ideas to foster participation, inclusion, and willingness

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

These programs currently exist and are working in my community. More is needed to anticipate the learners needs and interest while providing opportunities for growth.

Tell us about your work experience:

• METS-(Modernizing Education Through Student) engages and empowers student learning in all fields to participate in co-curricular activities and pursue STEM2 (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and More) related careers.
• SPARC (Science Peer and Research Collaborative) Program serves to generate curricular innovation, undergraduate research initiatives, and a peer to peer success network that produces increased minority participation in science.
