why re-invent the wheel? What is necessary to implement the best ideas is to bring separate components together in a coherent fashion. OPENideo could support these great ideas: @Connected Learning for Higher Education, @OPEN Media Lab these ideas speak to open systems where there are many sources to learn from. However, we also must be able to navigate these systems for open connected learning. OPENideo could offer the backbone structure of such a system.

Delineation of Education

Education could be build up of the following components:

- Open Content (Coursera.com, EDx.org, EduFlix, Ted of a Topic etc)

- Open guidance (mentors, teachers) see iTeach

- Open framework (OPENideo-Ed)

- Open accreditation (CredEd, OPENideo, Aspiring Minds)

Application

OPENideo-Ed could find a balance between open and closed/ local systems. The closed local system would be focused on smaller multi disciplinary problems raised by the university and managed bu the university (or high school). OPENideo-Ed could in return ask for content and open challenges sponsored by the university. There will be many business models possible. However, why re-invent the wheel when there is a great platform which could be licensed to local installations/ connected to any institute. We should also not restrict our thinking to traditional institutes. Why not co-op sponsored instances to keep adults learning? why not prison institute sponsored installations with physical group work on site? OPENideo-Ed is open education for everyone, bringing the power of open resources to local applications

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

All who want to learn. however the idea is geared to institutes who want to offer some structure around the endless possibilities which can be found online

This idea emerged from:

  • An individual

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Any feedback is welcome. In particular, what could the business model be for OPENideo, why would IDEO start a new market for themselves?

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

discuss here on the forum with others whether this is how they would like to learn when they are in organized learning

Tell us about your work experience:

i work in the financial industry, always solving problems by process design

Hi Joost, Interesting idea. Would the challenges be linked to a MOOC/course that could provide additional information or skills that could be beneficial e.g. for this challenge a MOOC on the education system in the US, design thinking, prototyping, virtual reality (if someone had a solution based around that)? What do you think of The MatchMaker ?

Hi Kate, yes the idea is to get real problems in front of the students! therefore The MatchMaker fits my suggestion perfectly well. I totally agree that current students are ill equipped out of university. I have interviewed hundreds of students for graduate programs in finance, and most are frankly not well prepared although some had 1st degrees. Having a platform like openideo used to source and solve real problems would equip the students with modern day skills. Of course universities could supplement the challenges with business cases to have a rounded curriculum and to fill gaps if they cant source enough problems :)
