In basic terms create a community program for each day of the year, a different job everyday, with a representative coming into high school or college. The program can be applied into the undecided program if they have one (doe not apply to high schools). Of course if your not in the undecided program or if the college doesn't have one you can still sign up for the day you want. This program highlights having a representative explain the basis of their typical work day and once that is done the students can go to the workplace and  get first hand experience on the job.College students can sign up any time of the year whether its summer or winter ahead of time (maybe a month prior to the rep's visit). *The high school students many be limited in the days they can participate in.* This program will have a limit to how many people can sign up. There may be some priority in picking the students who attend, for example: If they are interested in that field, if they are currently studying for that job/degree, etc..... The representative will be chosen on a volunteer basis (no incentives to participate) and they must provide information if there are any hazards for the work before they take the students to the field. This is non-profit idea for students, for benefits in possible career choices they haven't thought about.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

This is designed for college students and maybe high school students who want to experience the field of work for one day. I feel once they experience this, they get to decide or think about their next step in life. College degrees/majors are hazy, many people change their majors so often and I want to change that.

This idea emerged from:

  • A student brainstorm
  • An individual

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Setting up a basic criteria for the selection of students participating in this program and the recruiting of the volunteers for reps.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Test it in a local community college and survey the results for the mock experiments.

Tell us about your work experience:

I am a normal high school senior who works as a dish washer in a restaurant. I am currently in an innovation class (that's why I'm doing this!).

Hi Hiro!

Happy New Year!

What do you think of this?

Could you incorporate some of these ideas and make it your own?
