Design your ideal future job

If no one knows what jobs there will be, then what should you study? Maybe you can design your ideal job and a custom program to go with it?

Once you reach adulthood at some point (for most of us, that's probably in the past) you might start thinking about where you'd want to go with you're life: finding an interesting profession, helping other people, becoming rich or a combination of these directions.

And as it comes to professions: there aren't that many of those that will make it far into the 21st century, so the job that you'd like might not yet exist, or might not exist anymore.

In either way, chances are low that when you apply at a university, that they will have a degree in EXACTLY your future life and career. So why not design your ideal future job yourself?

What if we could help future students by having them design their future job, combining their personal interests with future trends, and creating a custom university program to go with that? We could organize a design process to help them figure out what will be important in the future where it comes to knowlegde and skills, what kind of jobs and activities work well for them and how to align that with their strengths and interests.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

This idea is designed for instructional/curriculum designers, HE administrators, policy makers. And most of all: students.

This idea emerged from:

  • An OpenIDEO outpost or chapter

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

1) Testing this idea with new university students and career counsellors. 2) Co-designing this workshop.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Hold a design workshop for future students to design their ideal job and use those for a career counselling session.

Tell us about your work experience:

I've been working as a project manager and as an instructional designer in higher education for a long time, combining expertise from education and creative industries. And I'm also involved in an initiative to find creative solutions for healthcare challenges.
