Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

Any teen, youth and young adult going through post-secondary, college or university education. This connected learning approach is different from the mainstream higher education which is more participatory, connected to interests, peers, careers and community.

This idea emerged from:

  • An individual
  • A Design Jam or Workshop event

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Collaboration on Human Centred Design , Prototyping and Implementation to enable this idea to be desirable, feasible and impactful.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

To initiate a community learning project using connected learning approach.

Tell us about your work experience:

I have worked in an higher education institution in an engineering teaching and research environment for 20+ years . From my observation and experience, the focus in HE are more in academic excellence in technical subjects, projects, elective subject in other discipline, examination and thesis writing. There is lacking in connectedness to social, civc and community engagement. I was also involved with local +Acumen chapter on the 'migrant workers' project using HCD.

This is awesome !!! (and particularly valuable for my idea of starting an OPEN Media Lab )

I didn't know about Connected Learning, but in a sense I have been trying to something similar. From my experience, I found that the best starting point is having a challenge for which we don't have the needed tools, but have to get them (new knowledge, new people...)... I found that this is the idea behind Open Ideo, and recently I began learning about System Dynamics (http://www.clexchange.org/) which might help you a lot to clarify a way to start a community learning project that also allows to learn more about how to think systemically.

Kind regards from Colombia,
