FULL DISCLOSURE: The images above are temporary samples from Invision's sample app prototypes. However, our team will work towards publishing our own tailored mock-up screens.  As a team, we plan on having the initial following features with our mobile smartphone app:

- Sign up/Login Page

- Password Page

- Achievement Page for the songs students have successfully completed,

- Audio Recording Page with the words of student's scanned notes appearing above so students can record themselves singing their notes to the beat of a selected song,

- "Friends" contact list to enable user connectivity and add the social sharing element to this process

- Page where students can view all of the songs they have recorded  


Mission: To create a new learning method to help students learn the academic material in a fun and efficient way!

Target Market: Students of all ages.

User Integration: By combining three actions that are inherent to students, Writing down notes, taking photos, and listening to music it will become a ubiquitous activity.  

Pnutek's Initial Skeleton Engineering plan:

1. Use OCR software to convert a photo of student's notes

2. At this step, there are two paths we wish to pursue

    A.  Use an API such as IBM Watson to say the words and match them to the syllabus of a song. 

    B. Use an API similar to the karaoke app Smule to match the syllables in the notes to the syllables in a song and have on screen display of the words. A highlighter and dot will bounce from word to word at the rhythm and beat of the song.


Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

Pnutek targets all members of Academia from students to professors who wish to better memorize material and is specifically designed to assist people with learning disabilities. Pnutek shows that an age-old activity such as studying can be adapted to fit a constantly evolving culture through music. Students can convert their scanned notes into a karaoke style platform or have the app vocalize their notes through their favorite songs.

OpenIDEO can help through input and guidance in these areas: - Idea refinement - Defining market/customer discovery - Coding capability - Creating a successful business model

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We are close to finishing an MVP prototype that we will use as a test case on our campus. Specifically, market this product through different channels such as the Disabilities Board, School of Education and other University student groups to get the most inclusive feedback.

Tell us about your work experience:

As a group of four college students, here is a little breakdown of our team experiences: As a team, we have a member well versed in the following areas: product design, coding, and ideation; healthcare, neuroscience, and interpersonal communication; economics, customer relationships, and computer science; entrepreneurship, private equity, and banking.

How would you describe this idea while in an elevator with someone? 2-3 sentences.

What if you could alleviate the monotony of studying by combining it with music? Pnutek bridges the gap between just looking at notes on a page and actively learning through song. Our app turns student taken notes into a song that can be sung to form a musical mnemonic.

What is the specific problem your idea is trying to solve? 1 sentence.

Our idea is solving the consumer pain of having difficulty or boredom studying material for class.

How is your idea different or unique from what is currently on the market?

While there are Karaoke and study apps on the market, there is no app that merges the two ideas into one. Students have yet to have an app that facilitates studying in this way by combining it with the music that they enjoy.

How do you plan to measure the impact of your idea?

We can measure the impact of our idea by taking target groups of students and comparing their academic performances before using our product to their performance after using Pnutek. In addition, we can also potentially do some 1 on 1 interviews with students who used our application to get their feedback and to see how deeply they understand the material they studied.

How might your idea be transferable to a large number of people?

Our idea can be transferable by students sharing the app and concept with their friends. While people love sharing viral media with one another, people also enjoy helping friends, especially if it comes to helping a friend do well academically in a passive fashion.

What are your immediate next steps after the challenge?

Our next steps after the challenge are to launch the app and send it to select high schools in the Metro Detroit area.

Hi Rahul,

I love the idea of combining memorization with music. Many students listen to music while they study to block outside noise and distractions, to get them into their own isolated bubble, or to get work done more enjoyably. There are a lot of studies that argue that music is distracting and will cause the brain to function less efficiently by forcing it to multitask through listening and thinking at the same time. Your innovation seamlessly combines these two tasks and has the potential to combine all the benefits while eradicating the concerns.

There are also studies that show that listening to certain genres of music and songs with a certain beat per minute will maximize retention and focus. I suggest looking into this and possibly limiting music to the optimal music selections.

Rahul,

This is a very innovative idea that certainly may revolutionize studying for students not only with higher education but even from a very young age. I see this idea as something that has been implemented into early childhood development, using songs as a way to teach young children. No doubt, this use of music comes from a scientific background of research as music helps with memorization as it creates a form of repetition and also promotes cognitive memory.
As a musician myself, I can certainly see the benefits. However, I'd like to ask how sophisticated you hope the software to be in converting text to the song and if this technology already exists (ie. Siri, Alexa, etc). Additionally, if instead of utilizing OCR software to capture a picture of the notes, if it may lead to less errors if the notes are digitally typed up.

Hello,

I think this is a really creative idea and will help students tackle academic material, especially students with disabilities. Because your platform will make studying fun, it can also encourage students to study more because they won't associate studying with boring/monotonous activity.
My question is regarding the assessment of their academic performance to test the effectiveness of this app. How will you compare the users' old academic performance to their new ones? Are you going to create individualized assessment tests based on their academic material?

Hi Team Pnutek,

I just received a message that my study song was ready from your demo sight! I enjoyed watching the video that went along with the song and also liked that you picked such a familiar song, Beethoven's 5th Symphony. I can see how this melody would be easy to remember which would be a fantastic benefit while trying to pair terminology or study materials with it. As for constructive feedback, it was very hard to understand the diction of the study words added to the song. I listened to the song clip a few times and still struggled to make out what it was saying. The app also broke up the phrasing of a sentence so the musical line ended on an "it" or something fairly inconsequential.
Overall I am a huge fan of your concept! I think with a little finessing of the execution and you will having a great product on your hands.

I'm so happy you enjoyed your "study song!"

Yes, I distinctly remember yours just not coming out our system quite right. Unfortunately that can happen from time-to-time under our current technological workflow using ditty API. In the future I'm going to work very hard trying to get the API to minimize these issues. If we're dissatisfied with the results, then we will start taking steps to build a text to song system in house.

Hello,
I have always found it amazing how easy it is to recall song lyrics in comparison to how difficult it can be to remember educational material. Linking the two, seems like a great idea and definitely something that appeals to me as a student. How would you acquire the copyrights to the songs and would this pose as a significant cost? Also would there be any way to make the notes more concise? Also how would this product be marketed to students, is there any benefit in partnering with another application that is already established in the academic world? This would give it a sense of credibility. For example, another common method to assist with memorization is flashcards. Maybe a partnership or advertising on Quizlet would be a good positioning technique and a good way to access the target market.

In terms of copyrights of songs, we wouldn't have to purchase those rights since free soundtracks are available, in the event that a copyright issue does arise, we will license the copyright or partner with an existing music copyright holding firm such as Spotify for example. Could you please elaborate on what you mean by make the notes more concise?

Absolutely! Our Marketing timeline is to increasingly incorporate larger and larger partners such as Quizlet, or K-12 Elevate learning to help lend credibility to our idea. In addition, we are devising a distribution model that would use education institutes and/or entire districts to promote the use of edtech such as Pnutek!

As someone who can remember lyrics in a heartbeat and has trouble recalling information no matter how many flashcards I make, this sounds like an incredible idea to me! I have a couple questions regarding the logistics of the program. First, how do you plan on acquiring copyrights to the songs and wouldn't paying royalty fees to increase the cost of the product development? Second, how long will it take to translate a document into an audio tape?

I wonder if you could look into CourseHero and Quizlet and see if you can turn this into a crowdsourcing platform where all the translated audios can be saved and then other students won't have to redo it over and over again? This could help you bring potentially partnership with major higher education publishers and secure some steady revenue stream?

Hello,

I think this is an interesting idea, yet I am concerned about the depth of knowledge that can be learned from this application. For example, many students share the experience that they memorize best when they write their notes down and relate it to other teachings they have learned in the past. This is because they are able to understand the context of the information they are absorbing, and thus they are able to memorize it better because of their understanding of the material. What this idea makes me wonder is if their memorization will be one that is more surface level than substantive? While the student may be able to memorize their notes for an exam, will he/she quickly forget it soon after since the information has only been attributed to a catchy song, rather than placed in the context of other information they have learned?

Additionally, I am not sure how other visuals could be captured though song. Is this a limitation of the app, or is the app only focused on memorizing through text?

Hello Dominique!

As a member of the Pnutek Team, Rahul and I frequently discussed the implications of our application on learning for most students prior to selecting this idea. As a Neuroscience student at the University of Michigan, I was able to bounce psychological concepts that formed the basis of this idea off of my professors and contemporaries, which led to this idea for more efficient learning.

In order for a deeper conceptual knowledge to begin to form, there is a base level of understanding and memorization that often needs to occur, especially for STEM classes. This is a reason why students already frequently seek ways to better build foundations for learning, before diving to deeper understanding. In this way, our idea is extremely similar to a more interactive version of flashcards, which are a very useful tool for deeper conceptual learning as well as rote memorization.

Deeper conceptual understanding tends to come from Elaborative Rehearsal (As described here in a UC Berkley paper: http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~kihlstrm/GSI_2011.htm ), which is a more active stance on learning that comes from both memorization and from active work on material. Through pairing the notes with a song that students can sing along to, our app promotes a fashion of active studying that can be easy to do anywhere. If one just looks at notes on a paper with the intention of memorizing what is in front of them, your idea of rote memorization would be applicable. But in this case, we are promoting the active learning of the notes in a novel context: through pairing them with a song that the user knows, that they can sing either out loud or in their head whenever they desire.

Through this, the students studies leave the notebook,and can be carried with them anywhere they go for active thought, whether on a subway, at work, or on the go. One cannot open a notebook in the middle of a work shift, but one can whistle the tune to the song their Biology notes have been paired to while they work. This promotes studying in non traditional studying contexts, which can help with the psychological idea of Incubation ( http://www.spring.org.uk/2012/07/the-incubation-effect-how-to-break-through-a-mental-block.php). This aids a student to think of their studies in a new way, which can help with the deeper understanding that we seek for education.

Deeper understanding comes from continually working through concepts. Wouldn't an app that makes continually studying and working through notes more enjoyable for students lead to both an expertise at rote learning, and deeper understanding? I would challenge that these two things are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, if a student tied different chapters of notes to different songs and studied all of them that way, they would also be able to contextualixe their notes. One could even put simpler foundational concepts in the first verse of the song they've selected, and then in subsequent verses of the song write down more complex things that built off of earlier concepts to show a progression in the class material.

On on the topic of visuals- this is a current limitation of the app. There are two ways we could work around this:

1. Have students represent graphs in word format (the x axis is ___, the y axis is ____). This however is ultimately unfulfilling.

2. Allow for picture insertions into the notes. This is doable, but it does make one ask what the difference is between putting the picture in the app, or just looking at the picture while listening to a song. This is something that we will need to think about and discuss more.

Some questions about your user journey:
2. They scan the notes into our app and select a song they like based on the soundtrack or appear in karaoke form (Would this app be accessible to both iPhone and Android users?)
3. The app will sing the notes to the students in their favorite tune or students will sing their notes as they appear on the screen (Do you plan to provide the option to limit the length of the notes/song? Ex: if one page of notes = a 10 minute song and you want to leave out some irrelevant notes)

I think this is a very interesting idea, but I am concerned about its limits in terms of which subject areas would work best for this app. It would work well for, say, an anatomy student memorizing the muscles, but what about an economics student who needed to study graphs of supply and demand? It would be great if there was a way to convert images/graphs to written language.

Interesting idea! Do you have plans for assessing the effectiveness of the approach compared with more traditional approaches to learning? As well as test scores that reflect ability to regurgitate facts there should also be tests that demonstrate understanding of concepts.

Hi Team PnuTek,

I give you credit for your one line introduction of your idea, "Pnutek is a smartphone application that enables students to scan their academic notes and convert them into a mnemonic through music" as it immediately drew me in. Almost 15 years ago I was taking Advanced Biology and having to learn the many muscles of the body. A group of my friends and I made up a song as a way to prepare for the exam and to this day I can remember that song! Not only did it help me memorize the content, but certainly made the experience more enjoyable to learn fairly mundane information. While I would argue that rote memorization like this is often strictly for a grade on the exam, there are some subject matters that I can understand require this base knowledge in order to build on future concepts/ideas. I have submitted an expert for your demo and would be happy to give you all more feedback once I receive the response. I am interested to see how you connect personal musical interests within the app. I would also be interested to see if the music is just the melodic tones or if it has background instrumental accompaniment. My initial thought is that the melodic tones alone would alleviate the potential distractions background accompaniment could cause but without hearing the two options side by side it is hard to say. Look forward to seeing your progress!

This is quite an innovative idea! I studied Chinese (Mandarin) in high school and college and would have benefited from something like this. As it was, sometimes my classmates and I learned characters using arm motions so that we could remember specific tones. English wasn't tonal at all so it's a hard skill to learn. Much of language learning is rote (especially in the beginning). Have you considered foreign language as a potential subject area? Specifically, languages with tonal influences could really benefit from this.

Thank you for your input! It's really exciting for us to hear about your experiences and I think tonal learning is a very interesting challenge. We did not think of integrating foreign languages as a potential subject area as yet! That is a fascinating challenge but it is something that is definitely worth pursuing. The only pitfall I can think of is enhancing the OCR (Optimal Character Recognition) software to read numerous languages. I personally am not sure as to how we would create such a software that is synced to numerous language databases, but I will ask our technical wizard, Max Albert!

I will bring it up to the team and as we further the application of our idea, we will be sure to keep you updated as things progress! Hi Rahul.
I like this idea! I think this idea has potential to benefit a variety of learners. As a medical student years ago I recall using mnemonics at times. There was one that everyone used for the cranial nerves. Googling that now I see there are many variations of it. I guess folk had fun with that!

Just to clarify, is the idea that one inputs their notes and then they sing and record their own voice to create the audio file? If that is the case I think just singing it in might help one memorize. Not sure that I would want to hear the playback of myself singing over and over however. Will the technology help to find a song that might "match" the notes, or does the user choose music that he likes?

By sharing do you envision sharing the "songs" between students? I can imagine a library of these and that there might be ones that users like best, for sound and content, as study aides. (just as there are a variety of mnemonics for the cranial nerves)

Hi Bettina!

As a prospective Medical student and member of Pnutek myself, I'd be delighted to provide some clarification.

We currently have two options for the function of the app at the present moment. One will be where the student input notes are sung by a computer program called IBM Watson, which students can play and listen to.

The other option will function much like Karaoke. The words of the notes are displayed on screen, but the singing that the user does is not recorded. This is promote a commitment to studying through repeated times singing the song, which would be an example of active learning and rehearsal instead of just reading notes all the time.

The idea of songs being shared would mostly have to do with the IBM Watson program, where "Songs" (Sets of notes) could be shared with other users of the app for review and study.

Hopefully that clarifies things!

Hi Rahul,
Seems like a very interesting idea considering the usability aspect, but if we think about learnability apect I think it would promote rote learning. The whole point behind imparting education is to develop concepts of the student.
Lets take example of a student using this app who is dull in studies and hardly understands concepts, but is thorough with the class notes, thanks to your app. And there is another student who studies, is clear with concepts. Now if these both are appearing for an exam, it is more likely that both will score the same marks. In the same time, it would be equally likely that the dull student thorough with notes wouldnt be able to perform good, inspite of working hard and going through the notes is a fun way.
I like the technology being used, but considering the pyschology of the student, this would an easy way out for them to prepare for exams since the product would help them in all ways to memorize, but not understand. Please correct me if I misunderstood your solution in any way

I would recommend really digging down into what is the problem, how is this solution and think about what the competitors are to demonstrate that this a ‘need to have’ and not a ‘nice to have’.

For some reason my team members and I are struggling with registration, however, we are working towards solving the issue.

Yes! You are pronouncing it perfectly :) The name is dissected into two parts, Pnu and Tek. Pnu stems from the phonetic sound of "mnemonic" which is the primary objective of our application. Tek represents that we are a tech based firm and also we felt for branding purposes, Tek is unique and fun to spell!

In terms of our story, the idea originated because members of our team have certain learning disabilities which gave us the opportunity to explore this unmet need. For us, reading handwritten notes and dense textbooks isn't the most efficient way to truly understand and retain the information taught in class. We conceptualized this idea to help students across all ages and disciplines learn in a way that is both fun and effective.

As an update, our team is currently working on developing mockup images to help explain our vision!

HI Ms. Rushton,

Our team members have solved the registration problem! I'm not sure what the solution was, but they have successfully registered!

We have uploaded some sample mockup designs of what we envision for our app in terms of design and functionality. These images were taken from Invision/Tethr's website as a baseline for our team to work off of to design our own mock-ups! I have elaborated more on these images in our full description section.

I hope that these images help give you a better idea of our idea? Do you have any suggestions as to how we might approach this product or it's design?

I would suggest reaching out to some ideators with similar ideas for feedback e.g. MoMint   Also, you might want to look at The MatchMaker which has a link to a prototype site with clickable link. It is not directly related to your idea, but it might give you a few ideas.

Can you tell me about an example of a user for Pnutek and what is their experience when using Pnutek (i.e. user journey)?

Dear Ms. Rushton,

Thank you for your response! Our team will be sure to use these resources to the best of our ability.

In terms of user journey, what we envision is the following:

1. Student's take hand written or typed notes during their classes
2. They scan the notes into our app and select a song they like based on the soundtrack or appear in karaoke form
3. The app will sing the notes to the students in their favorite tune or students will sing their notes as they appear on the screen
4. Students will listen to their notes in musical form while walking to class and while studying
5. Students can then share their notes or recordings of themselves singing class notes with their friends

We hope to create a more informative infographic that might outline the user journey a bit better! Once we have created these necessary documents I will be sure to post them for everyone to view!
