Prototype your Futures

Using principles of design thinking, rapid prototyping and foresight to help individuals design their career

There is no right choice when you can't predict your future.

From an early age, we were told this fantasy - Study well, Go to a good school, get good grades, get a job and then you will live happily ever after. Unfortunately, once students reach the university level they begin to realize that getting good grades isn't enough or they may realize that they don't like their major. They may then decide to go for graduate school in order to buy more time or end up in a job that crushes their soul.

We propose a video game, that combines design thinking and foresight and helps students design their life and prototype it by living it for a few days. Students will attend a day long workshop where they will use design thinking with foresight and design a few careers that interest them. They can try out each career in the game by playing for a few days.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

The idea is aimed at University level students who are either choosing their majors and planning out their careers and are looking for their first job. The game could also be used by people who are planning a career change

This idea emerged from:

  • An OpenIDEO outpost or chapter

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

We want to make the game as realistic as possible . So we would love some help with designing career paths in the game. We can use help in connecting with individuals in different careers. And mentorship while designing the game.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We want to start out with a game which can be built in 8-12 weeks. The game would simulate two kinds of scenarios - Going to a grad school versus getting a job in the industry for engineering students .

Tell us about your work experience:

We have an engineer who built a startup in her undergrad and can program video games and their AI. We have a passionate designer who always wanted to design a multi player video game (She is obsessed with the sims) . We are happy to have any one who is excited by this idea on board

Manvitha Ponnapati , that is a cool idea. I would like to play it! Could we create people's futures? Its just data extrapolation.
