  • My learning program is designed for adults at the k-3 literacy level and supports their learning needs at home, work and on the go! It it now used globally and will be finished in early 2017! https://app.biteable.com/watch/explainer-1-1237466/

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

Education of tomorrow needs to meet the students who desire to learn but do not have the resources to do so. It also needs to be flexible, tangible and meet all learning styles. Literacy Speedway was designed for K-3 English language learners for free and “Education Speedway” can be embedded with any and all curriculum to mee the needs of all students.

This idea emerged from:

  • An individual

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

My program raises literacy levels and can teach any and all course material to students for FREE! I would have OpenIDEO enhance it with greater AI and game tech.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

I have test piloted this idea for over five years and it is now being used outside the US. I was just asked to teach a group of teachers how to use it in Africa! “Education Speedway” could be enhanced via a "global library” that could be linked to the portal and "education of the future" technology can be embedded via Artificial Intelligence, Project Based Learning Opportunities and learning in all languages. Not only will it meet the needs of all learners, but facilitates an educated populous.

Tell us about your work experience:

I am a Literacy Specialist and Literacy Speedway is now used in the US and abroad. My belief is that a well developed product sells itself and money is not necessary on massive marketing, especially with the internet sites that exist. Literacy Speedway meets the needs of all learning styles and more importantly is engaging, collaborative and flexible. This learning platform was created for users of all backgrounds and will be finished on early 2017.

Hi Mary, thanks so much for sharing your idea with the OpenIDEO community! I'm really interested in the app program that you've developed. I work on higher education programs for refugees, and English literacy and proficiency is a huge challenge for many of our students. I would love to learn more about the pilot program you are conducting with the teachers in Africa, and how it is going! Do you have any evidence of how your program can be used to support school readiness at various levels - primary, secondary or tertiary?

Thanks. I have constructed the program with less then 2,000.00 and it is now used in various counties. I am sending videos and skype to teach teachers in Africa. I’ve taught literacy for 5 years with a 100 percent success rate. Hopefully, I will be getting a grant soon to pay for more AI to be embedded in... I work full time as a literacy specialist so the AI has been started but won’t be completed until the summer!

Hi Mary,

This is a very interesting idea. Would there be the possibility to follow students? What I mean is, are there reminders or notifications to help student follow the course without too many interruptions? Does the platform contain daily or weekly goals to show students their progress trying to motivate them?

I just read about Skill Labs and commented on their site. It is critical for the U.S. educational system to integrate more Tech skills in the classrooms and I know STEM does this but is not available at all schools. I am going to add a link from “ Literacy Speedway” and “Education Speedway” that incorporates skills and trades for students to learn. I will incorporate this via videos and with funding incorporate it via articificial intelligence.

Learning Without Bounderies is a concept that resignates with my design. I like the fact that students can learn anywhere in the world and be unrescricted financially, socially and socio-economically.

Hi Mary,

Thank you for sharing your idea.

For our global community, would you be able to tell us what is k-3 literacy level English? Does it incorporate the needs of refugees and foreign students?

I am just wondering if there is a connection to these posts in the research phase:
A lost opportunity for continued learning for recent refugees in Greece: A deeper look at the barriers and biases in Western institutions. Higher education for resettled refugees: competency-based degrees for successful transition and employment
The role and needs of international students in American higher education

Could you post links to your site so the community can have a look?

The poster of Game Plan 2020 - Mariam Adil is involved in game development for education. It might be worth you reaching out to her

Good Afternoon.

Thank you for your questions.

The characteristics of a K-3 Level English curriculum begins with students at the following literacy level or higher.

-Characteristic of kindergarten level is the ability to respond appropriately to specific vocabulary and simple statements, questions and stories.
-Specific Sight Words
-For example, citing illustrations
-Follow directions of two or more steps that relate to familiar objects and experiences-
- Words correctly in most case and engages in short conversations that begin to engage in lengthier conversations.
-Maintaining the conversation by repeating what the other person says or by asking questions-
-As students move to levels 1,2,3... there are more complex sight words, sentence structures, etc.

2. K-3 literacy does incorporate the needs of refugees and foreign students. Literacy Speedway meets the needs of refugees and foriegn students via the implementation of visuals, audio, phonics, collaboration and it is FREE! Literacy Speedway reinforces phonics and other essential components of English prior to Level K, via videos, games and links to reading passages @ and lower then the K level.

3. I have taught literacy for several years and Literacy Speedway is a clone of how I teach in my classroom. I have had a 100% literacy success rate and this is why I developed an online portal for literacy this year. The success rate is based off of a triangulation of DATA that my district utilizes. I have not looked at the research phase at this juncture but by looking at the one’s you cited above, there is a connection to all refugee education and international students. I currently have students using my program abroad and why just asked to teach instructors for Literacy Speedway in Africa. A video is being constructed with specific instructions.

Literacy Speedway is on the Google Play Store: Literacy Speedway
The APP will be finished soon but is available due to testing it.

Thank You.

A user video is being made this week and will be uploaded to the Literacy Speedway portal. It will cite how to utilize Literacy Speedway and also how “Education Speedway” can be courses in all academic areas for FREE! These courses will follow the design of Literacy Speedway and meet all learners needs: multi-sensory, kinesthetic, DATA driven, accessable, collaborative and FREE!

Literacy Speedway is now being embedded with Artificial Intelligence and will have portals for varied content areas. Math, ELA, History, Science and Economics will be added to create an educational package that is comprehensive and FREE! Additional courses can be added for a fee that will be determined at a later date. What is essential is that there are courses FREE of charge and then feasible for all who desire.

The virtual, online course that I developed can be cloned for all subject areas and redefines the cost of education. DATA is collected, courses are re-formatted, differentiated or linked to varied levels, libraries are embedded and the cost of brick and mortar institutions is decreased.

This prototype can be enhanced by embedding Ted courses to the APP!

Global library could be integrated into “Education Speedway” and linked for access to all content curriculum.

Course materials can be uploaded for any and all courses via APPS, collaborative learning sites and even social media. DATA is derived via the testing portals that are embedded into the online courses and layered within the APPS! Online, free education, data driven and available for all!
