The difference between the most dissimilar characters, between a philosopher and a common street porter, for example, seems to arise not so much from nature, as from habit, custom, and education.  -- Adam Smith, The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Rationale for the establishment of the Kulukulu University: There are a quite number of Universities, but the need to improve on the quality of university education cannot be over-emphasized.
The idea was born out of the zeal to produce a new generation of young and vibrant minds that are driven with both academic excellence and standard etiquette and moral.

Rick Beyer said in an interview: ‘I think there are two distinct issues that colleges and universities in particular need to be concerned about: Cost and Price. Institutions tend to think about their own internal cost basis, which is different from the consumer paradigm which is about price. Institutions have driven up their costs through a combination of higher fixed costs or lower productivity. Over the decades those added costs have been passed on to the consumer with price increases at rate far beyond that of general inflation. This is how we got to where we are now: a not-so-very good place. Student debt continues to rise and families are increasingly challenged with finding affordable ways to pay for college. It is no longer sustainable’

This project will address the issue raised by Rick Beyer through outsourcing managed services to third parties. An example would be online enrollment and retention to reduce cost. Project Goals And Objectives:

1. The objectives of the project is to raise a new generation of youths that are sound academically and morally who will serve as fulcrum of the nation and as well the future leaders of The United State of America through the establishment of the new university with focus on the promotion of good leadership culture and democratic principles so as to assume responsible roles in their communities.

2. To establish an  educational institution whereby leadership education will necessarily be included in the instructional materials.

3. To serve as a Foundation for Leadership Development Programmes.

4. To reduce the cost of running University education

5. Incorporate entrepreneurship development courses and centre as part of the programme.

METHODOLOGY

University course will be designed in such a way to include leadership culture, entrepreneurship development and democratic principle in the curriculum. More efforts will be directed to training of students in vocation so as to be employers of labour rather than seeking for jobs that are not available. This will go a long way in preparing students for future challenges.

Reading books only can't equip the students' technical skills. Real practicality of what is being taught in the class will be improved beyond the way it is being practised. The current system is going to be rejuvenated in such a way that more practicals will be incorporated into the curricula.

Entrepreneurship development is to be incorporated as a core course to be passed before the graduation of any student. This is expected to be supported with knowledge hub or entrepreneurship development centre.

The proposed University is going to use internet to enrol students online and retention to reduce cost. There will be opportunity for students to attend lectures from far distance through online facilities. In the same vein, the Kulukulu University is planning to outsource managed services to third parties to reduce the cost of operating the tertiary institution in order to build sustainability and affordability into the school system.

Project Strategy: The University is expected to be located in a serene and conducive environment. Members of the staff will be highly skilled in school management, human resources and finance. Board of Trustees will be set up to ensure corporate governance. Admission of students will be strictly on excellent performance bases in the qualifying entrance examination.

Expected Results:
Education is the gate way to development as we focus on raising young future leaders in the two three years, 1,300 students would be enrolled thereby scaling to various continents like Africa. In three years, Illiteracy will have been reduced by 10%. And in the next five years from the day of commencement, the first graduating students will be creating value in the United State of America and beyond. Graduating students begin to influence good policy in government and as well new innovation in Science and Technology.

Innovation: The professional development will be a combination of class participation, lectures from home or far away through the use of technology like YouTube and one-on-one coaching that influences the aptitude and enthusiasm of students. Students will access tutoring programme which is (software based) offer as supplementary remedial assistance, accelerated learning and opportunity to utilize the resources, possess technology that is constantly developing. We will be taking continuous feedback from our stakeholders to ensure that we keep on innovating and meeting the students' needs.

Organization Background: Guildance Community Development Foundation is a registered civil society organization registered with the State of Texas. GCDF has become a touch bearer in providing top-quality services to a more diverse and greater number of people especially in marginalized societies, develop and strengthen the capacity of NGOs / CBOs, improve on youth through education and empowerment. In the last decade, the organization has organized school tours, symposia and training for youths and the younger generation. The core value has been to have a balance in leadership and academic excellence.. You can visit; www.guildance.org to know more about the work of Guildance Community Development Foundation.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

This idea is designed for students who are future leaders. It will reimagine higher education as the graduating students have what it takes to lead: companies, run government ministries and be country ambassador.

This idea emerged from:

  • A group brainstorm
  • An individual

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

OpenIDEO help will be needed in: matching with this project mentor who is a university expert to take this project to another level, project design, registration with department of education so that Kulukulu University can access federal funding and students get Pell grant, business model and curriculum development.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Survey among the potential students will be conducted to determine the level interest in the proposed university. Kulukulu University have it in mind to: i. Partner with Department of Education to get degree-granting license after the submission of Kulukulu University’s curriculum to committee for review. ii. Kulukulu University will also work with State Texas legislator in order to introduce a bill to grant Kulukulu University a license. iii. Get government recognition

There is nothing as most needed as higher education in Nigeria in this period for better tomorrow. Lack of sound higher education has made the country to be backward in the area of innovations that could bring improved conditions of living.

Knowledge is power, but most Nigerian youth are bankrupt of expected knowledge to guarantee us better future. No wonder that the very few greedy and selfish leaders are able to use the youth to achieve their self interests. They ensure that education accessible to the future generation is inadequate, thus securing the leadership positions of their wards alone.

There ia no doubt that this cause of preparing learners for the needs of tomorrow is a right course towards freedom. Indeed, it is a cause worth supporting.

@Omotoso Babatunde, my fellow chartered accountants you are on point. The ONLY way to arrest the situation is to raise future leaders who are well informed cum good leadership culture and entrepreneurship development.

This is a very brilliant idea considering the fact that education nowadays if not beyond the grasp of common man, it is very hard to fund a quality education. You coming up with this idea is not a surprise to me, everything you've touched turns into gold, such is your dedication, professionalism and commitment.

However, I am not an advocate of entirely free education because everything that to be free, people abuse and misuse it. I believe in affordable quality education. The system should he organised in such a way that beneficiaries will have a certain input in their educational training, this will make them to be serious and follow it up and the ultimate goal of coming us with this wonderful scheme is achieved .

With this I wish you all the best in this daunting but surmountable task.

@Badru Odunayo, sure it is going to be affordable quality education as contained in the concept paper. Kindly note that the proposed University is to be public owned, but not free education. Thank you.

A brilliant idea, targeting the poor masses with impact on the financial status of people and also aim at achieving financial stability. More power to your elbow.
When I was an undergraduate, even though, I studied a professional course, I kept thinking what next? During my service year, I kept thinking what next?
What am driving at is simply entrepreneurial skills. In Nigeria today, the skills have been incorporated into the service year. But that is not enough.
As a University lecturer, am of the opinion that while not compromising the academic standard, entrepreneurial skills should be hammered on.
I had opportunity of being a reviewer of an association's Constitution during my undergraduate, suggesting various ways by which best students could be rewarded, they were turned down then.
Dear initiator, put it at the back of your mind that there is need to reward good students, as this bring about competition among students and better brains for development.
I hope the organizers will support to convert this dream to a reality.
All the best.

@Olawale Alimi, your points are noted. Dr Alimi Olawale, as a renowned University lecturer currently at University of Ilorin in Nigeria, you are to join the board of the proposed Kulukulu University so as to tap from wealth of experience. This is an avenue to raise future leader. Together I believe we can make it happen.

Mr Adisa, your slogan " I will not rest until this world become a better place to live" speaks alot about you and I think it's not just a slogan but your habit. Sincerely, education is part of what can make the world become a better place to live and I pray to God almighty to make this laudable project a success. Mr Kulukulu, never relent on your services to humanity, your reward is in heaven.

With the little time I have spent with you, I can never doubt your ability to make things work when it comes to selfless services and community development. I believe you can achieve this project by God's grace. But I will like to remind you sir that to achieve something like this you will need to take risk and one of the hardest moment as of a leader is when you are to decide, you must be ready to take hard decisions that could lead to success of the project. I wish you best of luck Sir.

@Olajide Badru, your knowledge as educationist will be definitely needed here. Thank you.

I call him CS meaning Community Servant. He has done so much for his community far beyond what elected officials have done. The idea shared is a great one and I believe he will keep finetuning it till it is a finished product. His solid background and experience in the private sector will be useful in his quest to deliver a cheap and efficient higher education for indigent students.

Considering he is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, I believe he would stop at nothing to be successful and we will hold him by his words while ensuring that the education vis a vis affordability gap which he intends to bridge will be achieved

I can only wish him the best.

Hello Adisa! This is a wonderful initiative!

It sounds like you a proposing a highly selective management school for your area where admission is granted to only those who score in the top percentile on the entrance exam. Do you think this may cause tension within the community or ultimately contribute to a division of classes?

Hiring all the top talent to run the school will also be extremely cost intensive. How do you think outsourcing services could help offset the cost of this. Will all faculty work full time?

Photo of Adisa Adeniyi
Team

@ Michael Matthews, Thanks for your comment. It is being noted. Outsourcing and online registration is not ONLY going to reduce administrative cost especially the cost of hiring faculty staff/lecturers but improve the way the school will be operating. Students now have access to listening over and over to the supplementary education materials that will be available online and tape while leadership and entrepreneurship development now position the future leaders for the task ahead.

Hello Adisa,

It was really great to see your post. I myself attended a leadership program within my secondary/high school and was able to take part in a leadership program in college. This was a program that added "leadership" to your minor. We took classes like debate and government and did several projects within the community and our school.

Here is the link to the program:

What a bold and fantastic step to take the world to a greater height! You have hit the nail by saying education is the gateway to a better society. I have known you for over twenty five years. You are capable of this because you have facilitated many community development projects which has brought many citizens into limelight. You have impacted the life of humans in the areas of health, finance and agriculture. Now, you are setting out to impart knowledge. I can not wait to see this happening because your past involvment and experience in areas of life improvement have shown that you are capable. Like a typical African, Pray, and keep your head straight. Knowledge is light. Go ahead doing it.

Kabiru Kulukulu, I want to start by congratulating you on this commendable initiative. I am not surprised to see you conceptualising such a brilliant educational project, because you have always been identified with educational, humanitarian and developmental projects. No wonder you are fondly called "Community Servant"!
However, I wish to urge you to remain focused, steadfast and resilient. This is because a gigantic project of this nature requires total commitment, while achieving the goal is not a piece of cake. Bear in mind that tremendous obstacles are likely to set in, but with prayer and perseverance you can move mountains.
Good luck!!!

To start with, I am not surprised a bit when I saw this initiative bearing Mr Kabiru kulukulu's name. It is just one of the confirmations and affirmations of the nick name given to him as a community servant. His stride to see a better and comfortable living for all is second to non. I strongly believe in his mission and pray he will succeed in this. Proper and good Education is the only tool that can safe this society from its rotten situation we found ourselves. The young ones need to learn how to be properly involved in governance by incorporating leadership skills in our educational system from basic school. Though this won't be a cheap or easy task, but I believe in his ability and resilience in achieving this goal.
God bless you Mr Kabiru Adeniyi Adisa Kulukulu (CS)

This innovation is a fantastic one that can come up only from the mind of a genius. This is an innovation that will make our society a more improved one as:
1. The standard of education will be improved.
2. Improvement in the leadership ability of the leaders of tomorrow.
3. Reduce the competition of admission seekers in our citadel of learning.
4. Increase creativity
5. Reduce unemployment
6. Increase our society literacy level.

You've shown over time that you are a goal getter and pace setter. I commend you for this initiative.

Your immediate locality may be salvaged from the pangs of staunch illiteracy and underdevelopment if this come to fruition. It's lack of ideas like this that wanes the state of decency and economic development.

I do not see a prosperous society without educations not being its head priority.
Mr Adisa, your submission is good, however, add more values to it and make it a proper look establishment.

Good luck.

A project like this is what a nation of ours need at a time when people are being denied access to university education due to high competition and limited space. Nigeria seems to be drifting away from the targets of the SDGs and unless innovative ideas such as this are allowed to thrive, we may never get to anywhere close to our intended destination.

The innovator of this project is someone who has a track record of financial prudence and target delivery. This is one particular reason why I will continue to drum support for him and for this project to see the light of the day.
