We would like to teach the youth in the use of open source GIS tools and software like openstreetmap, openmapkit and QGIS. This will give them much needed skills in data collection, validation, visualization, analysis and presentation. These are skills that are much needed by companies and yet are rarely taught in school especially in Africa.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine higher education to support the needs of tomorrow?

Our idea is designed for the youth that are about to enter university, mid way their higher education or have just finished the university studies. The trend is that higher education means more books to read and more exams to do which is not necessary in the current world. The world today requires one to have a particular skill that is valuable to a company so that they can employ you. Therefore empowering the youth with these hands on skills will broaden their understanding beyond classroom.

This idea emerged from:

  • A group brainstorm

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

We would like to have more of the GIS tools like GPS units, laptops and phones, drones that are used in the mapping at our disposal that we can train more students in the art of mapping especially in Africa

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Community mapping with a small group of students from the University, from high school and those currently enrolled in University.

Tell us about your work experience:

I am a Quantity Surveyor by profession with the love of mapping and GIS. I am currently a mapping trainer with a Ugandan based NGO called Map Uganda and Humanitarian Openstreetmap Team (HOT). I was a team leader with HOT on a mapping financial inclusion project in Eastern Uganda. I have also had internship positions as a quantity surveyor with the Ministry of Works and Ministry of Defense(Engineers Brigade)

Hi Kiggudde!

This is great that you want to connect studies to real world needs. Maybe, your studies can help connect to real life problems as well! You should check out some of these posts and see what you think:

Hello Kiggudde, Andrea,
I have posted the MOOC-Augmented idea, and would like to confirm that the proposal would allow to connect "trainers" and "learners" at a low cost and with a high throughput.
I hope that it could help in some way.
All the best!

Hi Julien!

I think connecting learners and trainers is a great idea. I think a system like that would help learners stay more on topic of what is currently popular in the field, instead of waiting years for a degree or class.

Hi Kiggudde, interesting post! Any chance you could find an image to go along with it? Images help grab attention and tell a story. You should be able to use the Edit Contribution button on the top of your post and follow the instructions to add images from there. Looking forward to seeing more of your inspiring insights on OpenIDEO.
