These days, we're very conscious of where our food comes for nutritional reasons — but what about being conscious of the amount of labor that goes into every morsel of food? It surprises me that nutritional labels provide detailed breakdowns of the ingredients, but not of the story behind how much work and resources is required to produce it. I think for anyone who has grown their own food, there's also a deeper appreciation/ need to not waste any of it:)

What is a provocation or insight that might inspire others during this challenge?

What are the underlying legal issues to sharing food? Are they relevant or not? Are people aware of these issues?

Storytelling is a compelling concept that can be introduced into food labels. I love this concept! I am sure it will make a difference for the conscientious consumer. Some locally-grown foods or even commercial food products (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51PPvB4yzdL.jpg) already try to incorporate this. If your idea is more of a traditional table/label, then what is the best way to communicate the numbers/impact? For example, would it calculate the amount of water used to produce and then share the alternative of what that water could have been used for?

Hello Lynn. I agree that telling the story of not only the food but also the hands that cultivated it can be a compelling way to reconnect consumers with their food. Heifer International employs some of this storytelling with their coffee producers and spice farmers.

Hi Jennifer! Thanks for sharing your post, I absolutely agree that a greater awareness of the labor involved in growing food can help inspire people to be more mindful of not wasting food. I grew up on a farm and we grew most of our food- it has directly impacted the way I buy and cook my food and my awareness of food waste. I now live in southern Chile and am again cultivating food, working with the cycles of the Earth definitely changes the way we consume it- and I think your point about sharing the story of the food process is an essential piece of the solution puzzle!

Hi Jennifer! Thank you for your post. I have never thought about this but I think you are definitely onto something. Do you mean something like the man hours involved in making the food and/or the story of the farmers behind the food?
