On the science front, scientists have found a way to reduce food waste (mass) by about 90%, by converting it to butanol, which can be used in many other products, and for energy purposes.

In a similar vein, harnessing biofuels can done at one's home (from algae, for instance), and more effectively in biofuel plants.
