Hunger in the United States is a health issue.  The 48 Million people facing hunger also struggle with high rates of diet related health issues.  The primary cause of this is lack of access to healthy food.  We developed the Crowd-Feeding food drive model to enable people to fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and other healthy food so people facing hunger get the kind of food they really need.

People can choose to donate ugly fruits and vegetables to both support hunger and reduce food waste at the same time.

See www.ampyourgood.com for more info.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We partnered with Imperfect Produce to run a pilot program in San Francisco to see if people would choose to donate ugly fruits and vegetables if given the chance. They did!

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

We think our basic model works. We need help creating awareness that food drives can be used to reduce food waste and we need to identify companies, like Imperfect Produce, that we can partner with to source the produce.

Tell us about your work experience:

Thanks, Rebekah!  Regarding your comment about the receivers of the donations.  To ensure that donations match the needs of the receiving organizations, we collect data from them in terms of what food they need to serve their mission.  These are the food items made available for people to donate through our platform.  Think of it as a wedding registry - only for food.

I really like your Salvage Kitchen idea - you're spot on that its important to educate people about food preparation.  So many people struggling with food insecurity lack food preparation knowledge.  Your model addresses that.  Kudos!
