Converting all excess organic tomatoes into tomato paste and soup for local and export markets by rural small holder farmers

The project seeks to collect all excess and often thrown away tomatoes from rural Zimbabwe and process them into paste and other products.

The projects seeks to harness and collect all excess organic tomatoes produced by rural and small holder farmers into tomato paste and other related products. Between July and April, there are excess to the needs of local market of the tomatoes and most of these rot and are thrown away. The numbers are huge and there is real potential. The rural farmers lose out. The idea is create a cooperative company that is owned by farming communities, their shareholding will be relative to their raw materials supplied, after the first season, the raw materials are converted into equity. Starting off with a small plant that processes the tomatoes is ideal and will allow the project to grow steadily. This will benefit rural farmers; 1-as shareholders 2-improved lives 3- assured market 4- more farmers will farm tomatoes 5-will bring in forex 6-reduced food waste hence preserving the environment and climate change

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Research to be done that will seek to find out the tomato quantities that can be harvested. A small household plant can be purchased to process a certain amount of tomatoes and market the products i the major supermarkets to test the market. The truth is that there are a lot of imported products that are not organic and so a local product sold at a lower rate due to lower overheads and economies of scale can have a lot of traction.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

1- sourcing the equipment 2- guidance in the research 3- prototype 4- any technical guidance in the first 6 months of the project

Tell us about your work experience:

I have worked a lot in project designs and project management. I hold a Ph.D in project management. I have worked with hundreds of projects in Zimbabwe. My experience is biased towards systems thinking designs, ideas generations, compliance, grants management and mentorship
