Wasteline: Using Media to Chart the Course of Food Waste.

A media-driven campaign where the public is sensitized on food waste through a 1hour television program with a call-to-action.

A study by the Michigan University in 1990 revealed that among the home, school, church, peers, and television, the later has the greatest influence on people and business processes. No wonder the media is a big player sensitization or publicity.

Our media program LegalBliss and similar television programming deals on key societal issues that needs urgent change. For over 5years, we have realized that these kind of programs are very effective at reaching and transforming the way people behave towards an issue. This TV program will be aired on all national TV stations and can also be adapted to radio audience.

Wasteline will adopt a similar programming. With a media team in place, we will put together a one hour show that will carry:

-10minutes Playlet (short play on a key food waste issue or probably what meals/solutions to make from food to be wasted);

-20minutes Discussion Session (experts are invited every episode to discuss about food waste issues, technologies, solutions, approaches, etc.

-10minutes Phone-in (members of the public can call into the program and ask questions, add their views, make complaints, etc)

-5 Street Time (an add-in segment where the production crew go to the street to interface with individuals and organizations to know the reasons why they waste food or what they can do, and correct wrong approaches to food.

-10minutes Additional Resources (this remaining time will be used for other activities like information on available resources, contacts, call to action, and so on.

This solution is pretty straight forward as their are little work done. Our team consists of Script Writers, Producers, Directors, Actors/Actresses, and other talents necessary to make a complete production. 

Finally, we will create a website that allows people interface and lend their voices to the issues of food waste on a continuous level. On the website, users can also share short first person videos on how they are arresting food waste at their level.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Discuss with media stakeholders and then with all stakeholders on how they perceive and will welcome this idea. Start drafting scripts for sample episodes.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

We need more ideas on the stereotype of the media program and specific ideas to include in a typical one-hour show.

A computer Scientist, Global Social Entrepreneur, and CEO. My company also functions in ICT and media space. I have over 16years of industry experience in product design, social entrepreneurship, etc and have been awarded extensively for my efforts. My 5years knowledge in the media sector is also a tool for transformation. I lead the Production team for Media Court and other media projects. See
